View Full Version : Layin' up...

Here in the South, after a big meal we do something called "layin' up". That's where you've had so much to eat that was so good, you kinda become immobilized and can only lie down on the couch to enjoy the feeling in your stomach and wait for the bloating to go away. Tonight was such a night.

I had for dinner: Fried okra, steamed spinach, vine-ripe tomatoes (all from my garden), home-made bread with butter, and peach cobbler (peaches from the farmer's market). And not just a taste of each--lots of each! If I burped, I'd likely take flight.

Anyone else ever laid-up?

On occasion, but usually special times like thanksgiving. Or back when I was into BBQing and would cook a little of everything...steak, chicken, burgers, dogs, bratwurst, anything else that fit...all at once

But why didn't you invite us over? I'd love some home made peach cobbler

Everybody has a standing invitation to my house. Peach cobbler is the best...except for cherry cobbler, apple cobbler, rhubarb and raspberry cobbler, blackberry cobbler, of course. Dayum! I'm getting hungry again!

Mrs. and I drove down to Seaside in Feb. and I came very close to contacting you to see if you wanted to meet for lunch. How far off I-55 are you?

We'll be back.

"Layin' up" is also a colloquial expression for extended intervals of sexual intercourse.

For example, "I called and knocked on Brenda's door, but she ain't answering. She's in there layin' up with her boyfriend." :hump:

That kind of layin' up is impossible after my kind of layin' up.

No meat?

I didn't feel the need for meat with a meal like that. If I'd had meat, I probably couldn't eat the peach cobbler. It's all about priorities....
