Looks like Becka and I amy be heading to Memphis later this month. Will have one or maybe two nights in town.

What are the VBOT suggestions as far as if you can only pick one place to eat and one place to see while in town?

Just don't eat at Rendezvous for BBQ. Vastly over-rated.

I'd like to have one of the Elvis' sandwiches. I've had peanut butter and banana sandwiches many times. But, I think he liked them fried or a mixture of the banana and p. butter. Some restaurant there makes them in his style.

I should put it on my bucket list come to think about it...:leaving:

The sandwich, probably very tasty. The Mansion, what a tourist trap. Long lines waiting, gouging prices for everything there. Really not nostalgia, just overly commercialized.

Reviews:

This place is a tourist trap. You have to walk through an alley just to get to the restaurant.

The dry rub is ok, but the ribs and briskets are very dry. The cheese plate has barely any flavor. The service is beyond awful, especially if they know you're not a tourist.

I know this place is supposed to have some of the best ribs you have ever had... but to be honest... i was underwhelmed. It really was not that amazing. It could be that I am not a fan of the "dry rub", I tend to like my ribs with more sauce and juice. These seemed very dry to me.

************

Highly overrated compared to severl restaurants in the downtown and greater Memphis area. The food is okay, have had beter bbq and sides on Beale St several times at several locations. Unfortunatley everytime we entertain people from out of town they have to go to Rendezvous because its "famous". The only time I go here is to take those people.

Just returned from Rendezvous. Quickest meal, almost fast food in the speed with which our food was delivered, then we were out the door, disappointed in the ribs and the Ghost River beer. I make much better ribs with a dry rub. And the beer? Ummm, betta not. I'm mean, it's fine if you normally drink Bud.

I also order the chicken breast - boring, the coleslaw was brown in color, and the bread - I think that was hamburger buns split in half.

This place is legendary, so I tried it twice just to be sure I wasn't having a different experience than everyone else. The ribs were NOT special. I could name a dozen different places that don't have the wait, have better prices and most importantly serve far better BBQ. The staff had attitude both times which I think comes simply from knowing they have 50 tables lined up behind you waiting to be seated. There is NOTHING I saw that makes this place stand out at all.

Did I miss something here?

The wait was long.

The sausage and cheese plate was sweaty, bland and downright pointless.

The ribs were tough and lacking in flavour, despite a relatively tasty sauce on the side.

The atmosphere and service were both good, but other than that this was a wholly disappointing dinner. There are plenty of other decent BBQ joints in Memphis so don't waste your time waiting for a table here unless you have already exhausted the other options.

***************

1) The hype...the only reason i came here was because i was with a bunch of out of towners and since we were already in the area this seemed like a good bet.
2) Long wait, no space in the lobby area to stand, rude hostesses, having to wait outside with the BBQ smoke billowing out into the alleyway (some would say it's part of the experience--but it's not that great).
3) Value--first off, they don't have an option to get a full slab of ribs...a full slab is equivalent to a full order + small order. Their prices are way too expensive
4) No meat on the bones...seriously...after paying upwards of $30 for ribs, you expect to leave full...but there is very little meat on the bones...and what little meat is on there is tough...you shouldn't have to work hard at pulling the ribs apart.

Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous - Downtown - Memphis, TN (http://www.yelp.com/biz/charlie-vergos-rendezvous-memphis)

I have to concur. If you have an inexperienced palate, then maybe their BBQ is good to you. There are hundreds of places that serve better BBQ.
