View Full Version : Couldn't live without a truck anymore

or maybe I just wanted something to tinker with:
$3200 shitbox
96 f-150, 65k miles, 5.0 on a 5 spd stick, base base trim, but the a/c works and it has a 3.55 limited slip. Doesn't leak, drives straight. Mainly it's a cream puff, body and paint-wise (especially for a work truck). It was owned by a business in Oregon and would seem to have been parked in the shop.
Took $100 at the gas pump and still didn't fill up the rear tank all the way- will see how dismal the mpgs are, but if I can average 15, it will cost the same as my mustang running high octane at 16-17 mpg.
Fluids, shocks, and turning the front rotors are in the near future- that and a day under my buffing pads. Pray for my emissions check though- it seems tip-top, but we'll see.

oh yeah- chrome grill and bumpers will be forthcoming from the big truck junkyard in Oceanside. new headlamps are $65 per from Ford parts.com and all of that will really freshen up the look on the front end.

Congrats! And a camper is always a plus!
Thant's your old man showing again, Bunky :slap:...I'd have that camper on sawhorses in the back yard so quick your head would spin...
Then a call to BellTech - if they are even still in business- for about a 4/6 drop, add some slick wheels, a hidden hitch, lose the rear bumper and replace it with a roll pan, and paint the grill and front bumper same color as the truck. Nix the chrome...
It'd be SWEET! And I'm not even a Ford fan, usually.
But it'll make a real clean work truck too, as Mike described.

Yup, I've never been a Ford fan but If I picked up a nice older Chevy, I'd have some ideas along the lines of what you described too.
Mike sees something more practical and I can't argue with him as he sees things I just don't...yet.
I'd like to see how he comes along with it as it is a cream puff as he says! For a Ford, you know..
I just can't picture a chromed possum catcher on the front bumper of what you propose, though... old man...:slap: jeez.

I like it. But I'm a Ford truck guy :D

I changed my mind- I think I will keep this bumper and have it painted body color rather than get the chrome one.

Wifey's daily driver is a 96 F150 we bought new. It has 110K on it now, and has been by far, the most trouble free vehicle we've ever owned. Since new, it's had...
1. Radius Arm bushing
2. Tensioner Pulley (worn spot, replaced as a precaution...hadn't failed yet)
3. Heater Core
Other than tires, batteries, belts and hoses, that's it. I'd drive it coast to coast tomorrow. A/C is still ice cold on THE ORIGINAL CHARGE! I've never put an ounce of refrigerant in it in 17 years.

I just got rid of my 94 F-150 that I bought new... Mine had 192,000 miles on it and it still had the original rear brake shoes and the complete original exhaust system..The motor never got touched and it ran and sounded like new when I sold it.... I'll bet you I didn't spend $500.00 on that truck for maintainence the whole time I had it... The only things I ever replaced were the radiator, front rotors and the water pump... I did put plenty of tires on in those 19 years though....:D....So it looks like you may have many more miles to go before the misses gets a new truck Friz.......WW
The aftermarket for trucks is like 1,000,000 times bigger than the C6 Vettes. Any truck can be lowered, raised, sports suspension to handle like a mustang, to become a rock crawler, luxury items, HD bumpers, fenders extensions, campers, racks and MANY more.
I've seen websites like LMC truck, and it is an endless market.

Oh yes, I receive all types of catalogues from Summit. They are great, and normally I get their stuff in 2 working days.

Just aced the smog check, now waiting at the dmv. I'm having thoughts of gt-40 heads, jba shorty headers, a truck cam and some kind of 5.0 intake. If I'm dreaming, then a 5.4 l stroker crank.

I have to say my 1989 F250 is bulletproof too. I bought it in 2003 with 36K miles from original elderly owner. It now has 51K. Of those 51K, at least 48K has been towing an RV. I seldom use it for anything else. In the 10 years I've had it....
1. Master Cylinder
2. Both power window motors
3. Dual fuel tank switch canister
4. Transmission / Torque Converter rebuild (developed bad shudder on 2-3 shift)
It's a 460 EFI and very stout. It drags my 8000 lbs Travel Trailer around with zero drama. The previous owner converted the A/C to R134A in 2000. It hasn't been charged since and is ice cold.
It's up for sale right now. I figure if I can get $4K for it, it cost me $11 a month to own.

The three cars I've known you to sell- the '84, Marco, and now this- all would've found their way to my hous had you been closer. Judging by the pics, all were nearly immaculate, and all were cheaply sold in my opinion.
All I get here for those prices are junk...

Nice looking truck, Friz. I can tell you take care of your equipment!
Congrats, that's a fine looking truck. Personally I have a 07 extended cab and just sold a 97 extended cab with 210K on the odometer. That 97 never even had the valve covers off, only maint till the one timing chain tensioner just went bad which isn't bad for the age or mileage.

I think his wife does all the mechanical work on there vehicles...Friz just drives them....:hide:...At least thats what I heard...:island14:...WW

Almost had this truck a month- all fixed up... or at least I'm tired of spending money on it.
This thing had clear coat for days- buffed out pretty well:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/mschrameck/Cars/polished2_zpsb1ec8433.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/mschrameck/Cars/polished_zps41f9900d.jpg
decided to not do a junkyard chrome bumper and grill so I ordered a couple of cans of Eastwood rally wheel gray which is pretty close to the Ford Argent silver color.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/mschrameck/Cars/bumper_paint_zps9ffa4ed2.jpg
It's a stick shift, bench seat, rubber floor, roll-up windows no-nonsense XL work truck. Did I mention it has AM and FM?
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/mschrameck/Cars/benchseat_zps56c42798.jpg
Here's the 302- all 199hp of it. It ain't breaking a damn thing on the drivetrain.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/mschrameck/Cars/cleaneng_zpsee67dd94.jpg
So I got...
-a junkyard class 3 tow hitch,
-new front brakes and wheel bearings
-a new radius arm bushing (air chiseling rivets off the frame really impressed the neighbors I'm sure),
-an ign tune-up,
-Serpentine idler pulley (it wasn't even broke- but my last ford had me towed over this $20 wheel),
-coolant flush, trans oil, eng oil, brake flush, power steering flush,
-Replaced a broken part on the air injection (because CA),
-$4.99 Costco windshield wipers
-Found a $20 rubber bedmat.
-Tax, Lic, and registration.
-A lot of freaking cleaning...
-door dings removed from passenger door (cheap neighborhood hook-up!)
Camper shell needs paint, but I'm not sure if I will keep it.

Late because it was roached, I was going to do a half assed hillbilly patch job, until we found frame rust and recycled it. No real loss, only paid a few benjies for it.
