I have Perennial Seasonal Rhinitis (in English that means I'm always congested, but the 80'sdidn't help much either!) and my sinuses are always giving me trouble. I also have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine when sleeping, so when I'm congested bad it's really hard to sleep. I'd heard a lot about them but never tried one. A friend at work was telling me he used one every day. So I finally got one a couple of days ago. This shit works! I breathe so much better already. If you haven't tried one give it a thought. Follow the directions and it's easy to use.:bread:

Also, this is my first thread here! Whoo hoo!!:groupwave::banana::party::thumbsup:

I am a cpap user and I finally learned what you learned recently. I got a new machine and I have been using a netti pot for a week. I have been sick with allergies and sinusitis for months on end. I am hoping it is over.

I will try my cpap machine again for the first time in over a week.

for those on cpap and suffering from sinusitis, I recommend getting off cpap, using a neti pot and clariton for a week and you will be a new person.

The use of a neti pot requires mixing up a saline solution that will be poured through the nasal passages. A typical saline solution is a mixture of around 500 ml of water with 5 g of salt. Sodium bicarbonate is sometimes added (2.5 g) to buffer the solution and make it more gentle on the sinuses, but the effectiveness of this is unproven.[3] The neti pot used with a saline solution has been shown to be an effective treatment for hay fever[4], sinusitis, and other nasal conditions. Both isotonic and hypertonic saline is used for Neti.
[edit] History

The origins of nasal irrigation are understood to be in the ancient Hindu practice of Ayurveda whose roots are traced to the Vedas.

In modern times, saline nasal irrigation (SNI) has become more widely accepted as a home remedy to relieve conditions such as allergies, colds and mild sinus infections. Preliminary research indicates that SNI could also be an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis[4] and chronic sinusitis.[5]. A conference abstract presented in November 2009 indicated that frequent nasal irrigation led to higher rates of sinus infections. Short term use, however, seemed to be effective.[6]

Sorry, That just does not sound pleasant to have to pump saline mixture up your nose! :ack:

Same here. The sinusitis was what was killing me. Just couldn't freakin' breathe. I'm used to it as I am always stopped up, but have been battling bronchitis since October. Four trips to the doc. Every time I started feeling better it would get worse again. Friend at work kept telling me to try it, so I finally did. I still have to use the CPAP for the sleep apnea, but at least now I can breathe well enough to use it.

I have a CPAP machine that I would love to use right now. I'm so dragging ass right now.

I had surgery on my septum on 3 Dec. All was well until 2 weeks ago. I had asked the Dr. if I could start using my CPAP again, He gave me a date to start using it again. I waited a couple days after that date. 22 days after my surgery, I started bleeding. Bleeding is an understatement but unless ya'll want pics, I'll leave it at that. Wife took me to the ER and after having a "balloon" shoved in the cavity and inflated I got sent home. Apparently, my system collapsed during this whole process, I do have a vague memory of someone asking me if I was still with them. Wife says I came up swinging when they inflated the balloon. I do remember it hurting like hell but the morphine hit quick.

Got the balloon back out 2 days later. Now I have a wonderful infection, adhesion's inside the nose and the septum was knocked out of place. Nose aches like a bitch and is draining yellow crap constantly.

I haven't felt right since. Tired, beat down, exhausted....

I still miss my CPAP....this surgery was supposed to make it work better....

Thanks for letting me vent....

I use the bottle... Works great. As for risk of sinus infection, i guess that depends on what you put in the bottle. I use distilled water and the little packets that come with the bottle.

I considered the bottle instead, but the way the roof of my mouth is formed is what causes me to snore and have sleep apnea along with difficulty occasionally swallowing. It's hard for me to chew and food and breathe through my nose at the same time. Some things (especially small particles like coenbread) get sucked into my trachea if I breathe while chewing, so I tend to eat small bites and not breathe much as I chew. It doesn't close off well, which is what causes the snoring and apnea. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to use the bottle without choking on the solution. The pot I can tilt my head and just let it flow while breathing through my mouth.

I've been using one every night and morning for about the last month. It is amazing how something so simple can help so much.

I had surgery on my septum on 3 Dec. QUOTE]

Surgery was recommended to me as well. My brother had a deviated septum and had the surgery. He can breathe a little better, but said there was no way in hell he'd do it again. Very, very painful.
I was told if I had surgery on the upper palate it would correct my snoring and the sleep apnea and I wouldn't have to use the CPAP, but may cause me to have difficulty swallowing. I declined since I have problems with that now, and figured surgery would only make that problem worse. The CPAP doesn't bother me to use. I sleep much better and feel better too.

What mask do you use?

Been contemplating the surgery for septoplasty, tonsillectomy and uvulectomy.

I have the one that covers only the nose. I also have the nostril cushion one. I like the one that covers only the nose the best....

I miss my CPAP...it was a matter of getting used to it....the hose is the worst part.

I tried a CPAP for 6 months and finally gave up on it. I used to wake up 6-8 times a night with the damned thing. Some mornings I'd find it slung halfway across the bedroom.
I am investigating getting the Pillar Procedure done instead. :yesnod:
