Don't forget, we've got a two race penalty for cheating, so they've got to win 9 to take the cup, and we have to win 11 to keep it.

What happened to the single hull racing?

Barring a terrorist attack on the Kiwi boat, we just can't come back from a penalty like that.
The US should have put the boat on the trailer and just left after the penalty was given.

What was the penalty for?

Last year they ran 45 foot versions of the big boats in a run-up series meant to acclimate everyone with the wingsail cats. The 45' boats were supposed to be single design, identical across all the teams. Oracle was found to have modified their boat with weight.

They jumped the start. It was legit but too harsh imo.

We can, and we will.

Yesterday the wind favored the Kiwis in race 1 and we were down a sailor and then our boat was damaged for race 2.

I have high hopes for today.

As for the penalty... it's a fair cop, and the penalty is severe, but justified, IMO. If we were challenging, rather than defending, my opinion might have differed.

I was kind of amazed to see the power boats being outrun by some of the those catamarans yesterday. I think the average speed they were doing was around 40 knots.

It's wind-powered F1. I am a bit of a single-hull purist, but I can't deny these boats are badass.

Of course I want the USA to win but I was just stating this event is so lopsided. If 74 percent of winners are in sweeps, what is the come from behind ratio?

I don't understand how these boats are USA or New Zealand. Looks to me that most of the crew on the USA oracle are foreign. Must just be where the teams are based, but that really doesn't mean much. Something lost over time due to the blurring of lines.

... and for 5 days, it has been this way. All NZ needed was one win. The US needed 7.

Tomorrow's race 19 will be the decider. Winner take all. The US has absolutely CANED them, ending in a race where USA just flat out floored it and pulled out and passed. The Kiwis were thrashed.

It has been amazing to watch.

Note: If you're just joining us now, The event is a race to 9. Team USA was docked 2 points before the event, as penalty for cheating in a run-up series last year. USA needs 11 wins total, NZ just needs the 9.

Tools, guns, golf, aquariums, trees and apparently I'm terrible at carpentry, masonry, landscaping, cunnilingus and reversing a trailer... among many other things.

So what did the US team change after race 11? :)

And is it legal? :)

After race 3 they moved a couple guys around the crew and went with a new strategist. I think it was after race 7 that they changed the boat, moving a bit of weight off the nose.

Other that that, it really came down to learning how to use the boat in the conditions, by watching Team NZ and seeing what they were doing differently.

Took a few days for Team USA to figure out how to jibe without falling off the hydrofoils, and just how aggressive they could be with the VMG (Velocity Made Good, or the difference between actual boat speed, and angle of attack on the wind, giving actual speed toward the next mark). Both of those bits of knowledge really helped Team USA on the upwind legs, where we were being beaten mostly in the first week of racing.
