Ford sits between a rock and a hard place when approaching the redesign of its iconic muscle car, as sales of the Mustang have crashed and haven't been able to regain much momentum. This will be Ford's attempt to kill the retro styling and bring the car into the 21st century as a lighter and faster sports car.

Ford has to avoid the worst-case scenario of losing its core U.S. consumer with a modern design, yet if it doesn't evolve enough to appeal to a new global audience, it will fall short of Ford's sales ambition.

Simply put: For the Mustang to succeed overseas, it needs to shed a few hundred pounds and shrink in size. The new Mustang could be 15" shorter and 6" narrower.

Where did you get the news that Mustang sales have "crashed"?

Here are the sales numbers for the last four years, Mustang vs Camaro.

I would also expect a slowdown in sales for any enthusiast car in advance of such a momentous generation change.

I would also expect a slowdown in sales for any enthusiast car in advance of such a momentous generation change. :yesnod: That's what has the car companies the most worried.

They want to keep the traditional retro styling, but the demographic for retro is getting older and older (see the Corvette owners average age ).

But they also want to capture the younger buyer that right now is in love with econo-boxes and imports.

The styling evolution is certainly a challenge for Ford but they will have a top-notch performance car as a canvas. The styling department at Ford has been on a roll lately so I have high hopes for the new Mustang.

As much as I love the retro look of the '10-'14 Mustangs, all good things must come to an end. (I know the '05-'09 were retro, too, but their styling was merely OK.)

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say the sales graph for all performance and luxury coupes has a similar shape.

So they plummeted with the economic crash and have since basically not recovered and almost flat-lined.

I like it. I think if the front fenders had a little flare to balance out the look of the flared rear quarter panels.

Ford needs to get more HP to the rear wheels. This past summer Granatelli Motor Sports in Oxnard had a Dyno Day. Prizes for the most HP, for Forced Inductioin and Naturally Asperated.

A Shelby 500 GT rated at 650 HP put up over 700 lb-ft. torque but only 577 hp.

A 2012 SS 45 Aniv Ed. Camero with a whipple S.C. Pulled over 800 lb-ft of torque and 771 HP.

A weight reduction would be a big advantage for the new Mustang.

Just my .02

The current Ford Mustang weighs in at 3,523 pounds, and according to Edmunds, Ford is working with lighter materials to remove a minimum of 400 pounds for the 2015 model.

There are rumors that the Mustang will receive an EcoBoost engine, which left some 'Stang loyalists puzzled and anxious. I doubt there is anything to worry about, as Ford has a lot of engine flexibility that will help it sell well here in the U.S. and overseas. A turbocharged EcoBoost would help sell the muscle car in Europe, while the power-hungry U.S. consumer will no doubt have a top-of-the-line V-8 option. Also to the delight of U.S. loyalists, the pony car will finally kick the live rear axle in favor of an independent rear suspension.

I had a 1978 Mustang II with a V-8 and a 4-speed. Fun little car, like having a factory hot rod. It was not very roomy at all, and the T-Tops leaked like a sieve.

I'll wait until it comes out to reserve judgement. The new Camaro looks like it needs to hit a buffet just to get out of the parking lot. The Challenger, while I like the way it looks, is well, a Chrysler product. Straight up deal breaker for me. The Mustang will hang on to some of the old and bring in some new and still run circles around Mopar and Chevy. Don't get me wrong, I love Camaro's. First gen's run through my blood and have for a long time, especially the '69. I've driven a new SS. Did not like. I've driven a few new Mustang 5.0's, and brothers and sisters, they will get down with their bad selves, and love boost. Price, power, looks, wise Mustang has them all beat. They love boost and to make them spin the rollers off a dyno doesn't take huge mods. The Challenger without heavy mods is lucky to propel itself under its own power. Ford will not disappoint when the new Stang comes out. Oh, and the new Z/28 GMAFB. 60K for something that will be on blocks in trailer park in 4 years ain't worth that kind of cash layout. Feel free to quote me on any of my statements here. It's true, and well, the truth hurts.

I love the 13+ 5.0's Really dig the rear lights.

I would highly consider getting one... however financials are a bit tight for me to justify a 15K loan on a car that would consume more gas then my current DD. Besides 20-30K miles a year is just a bit much to be feeding a V8.
