I went to Kinzers Pa to the 65th Thresherman's Reunion at Rough and Tumble. Back in 1999, they acquired the 485hp Cooper engine and after many years of hard work, they have it running :hurray:

My former neighbor and friend Roger owns this 10 hp Springfield engine. It's a "sideshaft" design as the crankshaft turns a shaft which turns the overhead camshaft. The leather belt runs the mechanical fuel injection.

Here's Roger's 10 hp White and Middleton "hot tube" engine. You turn on the gas ( propane) and let the hot tube build up some heat. The hot tube ignites the fuel charge

Here's an early 4 hp Otto engine. A slightly different variation on the hot tube design, a "slide valve". As you watch the video, play attention to the sliding block. It actually transfers a "piece" of flame into the combustion which ignites the fuel charge.

Here's a pair of "hot air" engines. The flame heats air and through expansion and contraction with a water jacket, works very well as a water pump ( that's what they were used for )

The entire engine building requires a good supply of running water for cooling. Here's a 6 hp Otto engine running a Rumley Tri Plex water pump. The water pump will move 6000 gallon per hour.

Some people use a dinner bell to let you know it's time to eat. Here at Rough and Tumble, they use the steam building whistles plus most all of the steam tractors.

Was there a common application among these machines? I realize they can power just about whatever. My Uncle has some old hit and miss engines that the does a variety of things with. One churns ice cream, the other he grinds corn with. He's retired, so he gets to play with all kinds of cool old toys. Thanks for posting.:seasix:

The Cooper engine was a natural gas pipeline pump and was still in operation in the 1990s. There were seven of those engines in a row pumping natural gas.

The 10 hp Springfield engine ran a sawmill.

The 4 hp Otto engine ran a machine shop.

The 4" hot air engine was a water pump for a New England estate.
