Here I am minding my own business at a hotel 230 miles away from home doing my laundry. I go to the laundry out of the dryer and it is still going, but it sounds awfully loud like something hard is flopping around in there. My phone and wallet are in my hands.... wtf is it?

I open up the dryer ... yep still my stuff thankfully ... and its dry. Then I dig around and find out what was making the noise..... the fob to my car, which is also the key. :o_o:

I pictured myself immediately needing to have a key overnighted from home and staying an extra day or two. Down to the parking garage I went, hoping like hell the dryer actually saved it.

Nervously pressing the unlock button with my eyes closed... it worked!

Jumped into the car and it started fine. Let's hope it stays that way or it is :kick: come quitting time tomorrow.

If it came with a valet key, always have that accessible when you're traveling.. I usually just throw it in the bottom of a suitcase compartment.

And unrelated, also make a photocopy of your license and keep it in your suitcase in case you lose your wallet while traveling

It's one of those $400 BMW keyfob things, there is no real valet key. You can remove a piece of the keyfob that deactivates the ability to open the trunk and can be used to lock the glove box.

I hate these kinds of keys. I just bought a new Dodge P/U with one of those (no doubt courtesy of the failed marriage to MB).

Was it really so bad to have keys that could be duplicated for $ 1.99 down at the hardware store? Must everything be so complicated?

And of course, my real beef is, with these kinds of keys, it is damn near impossible to clean out ear wax or belly button lint. :D

Did you put vinegar in the rinse cycle to get rid of all the moldy smell?

Look in the Owners manual for the valet key. That's where mine was for the Bimmer. I thought all BMW's had a valet key, You must' got the cheap one....

Hmm... as far as I know only pulling this peice out (and sticking it into your pocket) before giving the FOB to the valet is the only option. They can still unlock the doors and start the car, but can't open the trunk and the "key" on the little chunk can be used to lock the glove box. There is no traditional lock cylinder to stick a key into on the dash or column.

BMW doesn't have the valet keys any longer. They stopped issueing them not long after they went to the electronic fob.

Are you sure you're not at a laundromat rather than a hotel.

I typically do my laundry the day before going home so I don't have to worry about doing it when I get back.
