You can really tell I softened up the front shocks.

Passenger looks to be having a good time.

I like the plane in the background. See those piles of rocks? The first pile is what that S2000 hit dead sideways, flying 5 feet in the air and landing past the 2nd pile of rocks. The plane had rocks on the wings. That dude better have played the lottery that night. He was truly lucky.

It's a very fast left-handed turn. I softened the shocks from 7 to 4 in the front last month (on a scale of 1-16). By having more nose roll, I have better weight transfer to the front tires, thus more grip. If you over do it, the handling gets sloppy. Fortunately, I just jumped from 295 wide tires to 315 wide. The wider tires have a more numb feeling, thus allowing me to soften the shocks to compensate.

It worked really well I think. :yesnod:

No tape was rolling. It was at the far end of the course. The only people who could see it first hand were stations 3-5. No cameras, phones, etc.... while working. I was 1/2 mile away in the timing RV and saw the car disappear, then a HUGE plume of dust.

If that Honda driver had a camera on board, that would have made one HELL of a YouTube video.

None. You must remember that that right rear is fully planted on the ground and has 345 wide rubber.

I used to have more negative camber in the back. At that time, I could not hook up at all.

Currently at 2.5 negative in the front, and only 1.5 negative in the rear. The car is so good right now, I'm not touching anything.

Funny, from the pictures, I'd think I'd be short on grip. From behind the wheel, from the feel in the butt, and from the over all time results, it says otherwise. Going into this weekend, the car had been freshly aligned, new upper control arms were put on the front and I went to the 315's in the front.

Now it's time to cheat, 'cuz the car won't get much faster otherwise. :D

Here's a shot from the opposite angle. Look how planted the dominant side is. In autocross, the switch-backs are usually rhythmic, so the rear tire shown here will be doing much of the pushing to the next element.

He needs a different front sway bar, or setting on the existing bar. I usually see a lot of FWD cars lift the inside rear wheel. This picture is a first for me. That turn does look to have a bit of an off camber turn to it.

It all depends on the shock and swaybar settings. I have my front sway bar set to softest. I can't change the rear sway bar. (Super Stock Rules) Front settings of 4 out of 16 is pretty soft on the shocks. I could keep the car as flat as a pancake if I wanted to, but it's slower that way. I've been experimenting with all of the different settings. Right now, my car is close to perfect for this sport.

Road course racing??? No, I would absolutely NOT use this setup.

Look at how much more your driver's side body is lifting off of the frame compared to mine. (use the front and rear wheel wells as a gauge) Naturally, the right front of my nose is nearly dragging on the ground, but it's all about weight transfer. Your car is too high off of the ground. :willy:

Actually, a few of the Fox chassis, SN95 and Miata's do it in that section.
I have driven that Cobra on a road course and its f'ng fast, but it is setup for triple duty, street/road course and auto-x.

It definitely needs to be lowered, its at factory ride height. I bought some Z06 springs and I am going to drop it down on the stops. I lowered my Miata and it handles WAY better.
At my old office, the nose bottomed out so I didn't want to lower the car. Now that I switched jobs and its basically a track car, I am going to drop it down.

Don't be jealous, get involved! Autocross is the easiest form of racing to get started in. You can take your streetcar onto the track for a very (VERY!!) small price. If you make it up to the northeast during a season, I'll bring you along to a race. I can always use an extra crew. Or, you can post on any racing forum 'new crew member looking to help.' Just about everyone will be happy to have a crew member around.

All you need is a car in good mechanical shape. It does not have to be a performance car and the chances of you breaking it are very slim. When my vette was aprt for a new clutch, I took a V6 Mustang and had a blast.

My Vette is in real good shape. Also have a Mazdaspeed6 that I could run. The biggest expense for me, I'm sure, would be tires. Tires ain't cheap for the Vette.

What he said. :yesnod:

We see cars of every make and model out there. Last weekend, I got to drive that 2011 Merc SL63 AMG.

We also have 15 year old Ford Focuses and Honda Civics. That's why the cars are grouped into classes....to keep it even.

It's an extremely fun sport and pretty easy on the wallet. Well, until you go as nuts as I do, then it's $25K/year. :willy:

Yes.

Mine is adjustable. In fact, I can still pull shims out and go more negative if I want. I did that before. When I did, the car could turn, but it could not accelerate, either in a straight line, or coming out of turns.

As a novice, you wont' have any considerable wear on the tires. One thing I have learned from autocross is that fairly new tires with some wear are safer than old tires with a ton of tread left. As tires age, they get hard and lose grip.
I see guys show up with their C4's and C5's on original low mile rubber and I am always amazed how little grip they have. A lot of people think they have good tires when in fact its usually the opposite.

How's Lehman doing? The only time I met him was at the GA event 2 yrs ago.

Dave is good. I'm trying to get him to co-drive my car at Dixie.

 Remember at Brooksville when you had me get in the passenger side and some random guy get in the backseat to see if you could get a better time with the weight even on both sides? It worked, but that guy about crapped his pants, and bailed out the minute we stopped.:lolsmile::lolsmile:

Kind of regional, but anyone can join it. It's simply racing any car in any class using your PAX time, rather than your raw time, however, the only people who typically run in it are the top drivers.

I ran in the National Championships in Lincoln, NE in 2009. I rained on Super Stock day 2. I was one of 6 drivers with 1 dry lap, and I blew it. I would have finished about 5th out of 61 drivers. :(

Ended up 39th

If I trophy at Dixie, and finances are strong in September (and I can take the time off), I may try and make it back this year. That's a big commitment for me. Almost 4,000 miles of towing and a week of time.

Check out this cool video from the entire event. My car made the video at the 28 second mark.

If my memory serves me right, I was 29th after day 1, and this was the FIRST event with me running with all of the electrical nannies OFF.

Consider this:

This was the last event before I went to Lincoln:
Final Raw Time Results, #7 - GCAC - Event #7 - Sun 08-16-2009 (http://gulfcoastautocrossers.com/2009-08-16%20event%207_raw.htm)

Final Raw Time Results, #1 - 2011-01-09 Event1 - Invalid DateTime (http://gulfcoastautocrossers.com/2011-01-09%20event%201_raw.htm)

Back then, I was still over 1 second slower than Lehman. Now we are equal, and he runs an ASP car. :yesnod: Same thing with Disimo, however, that car was insane as an EP car.

I've definitely improved, and I want another shot. :o_o:

It was built for, and won, OVERALL FTD at the 2005 Bay Bottom Crawl. A 2-mile course with 9 stations, with speeds reaching well into the triple digits at 5 or 6 places on course.

1. DAVID HUTTER FTD WKR LOTUS 7 2:24.735

Coincidentally, my Z06 just won the Super Stock class this past October, breaking the 51 year Super Stock record by 3.3 seconds.

By comparison, the 1974 Lola T440 that won this year's overall FTD ran a 2:11. It has 260 HP and weighs 900 pounds and is lower and narrower than the beast.

No "fendered" car, regardless of class, has ever broken a 2:20 lap.

All forms of racing have an implied risk. Some more than others. Autocross is very close to the bottom as far as risk goes. Drag racing (at least with passenger cars) is only slightly above. Drag racing an under 10 second car and wheel-to-wheel racing is where the big risks come into play.

:iagree: I've seen many, many more wrecks at the dragstrip than at autocross. Probably because usually, if you go off the course at autocross, you're just, well, off the course. Off the course at the dragstrip, there are unforgiving walls!

We've only had a few minor incidents at our auto-x site. Some broken wheels sliding into uneven parts of pavement and a cone cart casualty. The airfield we use is pretty wide and then has big fields surrounding to its fairly disaster proof. Any spot that has potential obtructions ends up having tight technical speed scrubbing sections to control the cars.
