There can be a lot of money in sales, and money can mitigate a lot of assholishness one encounters. It can even lead to a life of luxury on an island in the Keys.

Most people don't last the first two the three years. Very few make it to ten years. If you survive that long then you can say your a sales person.

All people NEED something. What you have to do is listen and they will always tell you what they need. It's not always what they are telling you what they want.

This thread is kind of ironic since I just had this conversation with one of our salesmen this morning.

One of our customers had returned a bunch of Cisco modules. Since they were brand new and still in the original Cisco packaging I asked the salesman why they had been returned.
His reply: "bags and labels are "dirty" "
These things are not dirty, they are just worn because they have never been opened and have probably been in number of boxes over the years being sold and shipped to different buyers who never used them.

I told him that situations like this are an excellent example of why I don't like to talk to customers (and am rarely asked to) since it would probably be nearly impossible for me to keep from telling them exactly how idiotic I think they are.

A sales guy is only as good as what he is selling IMO.

I don't consider myself a a true sales guy though. I'm more of a consultant educating people about my products/services and how we can help them out and how they can benefit from them. Gotta be persistent with follow up too. I swear i spend most of my time educating people than actually "selling" them.

Additionally you gotta always be talking to new contacts/potential customers. You have to keep adding to the pipeline at all times in the event you close out new prospects or those prospects walk.

You also have to stay in regular contact with you existing customers to let them know you appreciate them and their business. So they don't drop you for the guy that's a few bucks cheaper. That's why i am posting this from my hotel in Tallahassee (9AM meeting w/ an existing customer tomorrow).
