At this moment in 1945.....

An American B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, in one of the final chapters of World War II. It killed an estimated 140,000 by December that year. Three days later, the port city of Nagasaki was also bombed.

The Allied powers have long argued that the twin attacks brought a quick end to the war by speeding up Japan's surrender, preventing millions more casualties from a land invasion planned for later in the year.

Saved a lot of Japanese as well. They'd probably fought to the last child.

I'm sure that issue will be forever debated.

:iagree:

My God father was stationed in Japan for a short time before Korea. He went to the Beach's he was suppose to land on during WWII. The tiered defense made Normandy look like a kids game.

And when he went to the villages they told him they were taught American ate the children of their enemy. Women were trained to kill with sticks and small knifes. People were given mines and told to walk up to Americans and blow themselves up.

And the Marines who were training to make the landing were taught to kill every living thing they saw. Man, Women, children dog, cox and whatever. Kill them all because they will all kill you.

It would have been a blood bath of monumental proportions. America would have lost it's soul and Japan would have lost everything.

My dad had done a tour in Europe and was in training to go to the Pacific for another. I can assure you he was quite happy about it.:seasix:

When you look at it in this light, it probably did save many lives on both sides in the long run. :yesnod:

This has me concerned.......:toetap:

Abe's conservative Liberal Democratic Party has also said it wants to upgrade Japan's self-defence forces into a full-fledged military, which would mean overhauling a pacifist constitution imposed on the country by the US and its allies after WWII.

Later Tuesday, the forces' naval arm was due to hold a ceremony marking the launch of a 248-metre (810-foot) helicopter carrier which can accommodate nine aircraft.

Think of it this way. In preparation for the landing and follow on battle the US government bought 500K purple Heart medals.

They are still not used up.

With North Korea and China next door, they need to step it up. :yesnod:

Not sure if you have been noticing the news in Asia lately, but China has been causing lots of problems with the Philippines, and also Japan lately over some disputed islands.

The US is bound to protect both if anything happens, so I am guessing the US will be helping arm both, they have already started helping the Philippines.

I still think it is sad that all those people had to die.

The Japanese Government of those times, left their civilian people in harms way, even after all the warnings the US gave them in advance. :sadangel:

The Japanese have centuries of history where their people are just after thoughts to the ruling class.

You will never meet a kinder, more soft spoken man. I've met him several times in my youth.

I live just a few blocks away from the Truman library, lots of interesting pictures and facts about that day on display.

He never tried to act superior to anyone and could be seen walking around Independence often by himself.
