Looking to get a BluRay player, and leaning towards the PS3 as I can use it as a game console too - finally get to play some Call of Duty, etc..

Which version is best, and can you rip a Standard DVD to the PS3? If not can you move files there, otherwise what is the reasoning behind 320GB and 160Gb versions?

Mines the orginal model, it'll play ripped dvd and blue rays, also, the hard drive size is you'r prefrence as to what you want to do with it. If you'r using it as a mult-media center you'll want more. I dunno about the newer models but I just went to BB and bought a 400 gig hard drive and put that in. Just have to remeber to change it back if you ever have any waranty issues.

I rip the movies then move them over. If you plan on having a lot of music and movies, then the 320 is what you want. If you get a great deal on a lesser model, simply swap in a larger drive. My originally was an 80GB (first gen), but I swapped in a 160GB from my laptop. In the near future I will be swapping in perhaps a 500GB.

If you plan to backup the PS3, you'll need an external HD at least half of the capacity.

What's involved in the drive swap? I have an original 60gb model.

3 screws and pull it out. Reformat the new drive.

:iagree: Is the internal HD just for storage, or do you have to load PS3 software? I'm going to be looking into a media server as well, was thinking the HP Windows one, but that is being discontinued, I'll be hopefully ripping all of our DVD (400+) of them and storing them on a WHS for streaming to the PS3.

With the Ps3, you can't rip them right there on the console though, would you be able to connect to the HD of the PS3 from another box to move the movies there, or would you need to connect to another PC, then copy them to the PS3? If I'm just going to stream to the PS3, a 160GB should be enough, right?

You can certainly use an external drive. You have to format it FAT32, and use a good utility that allows the partition to format the full size. Do all the fun work on your PC, then just plug it into the PS3.

:lurk:

I've got a 250 GB, and this sounds like the right place to be for multimedia storage.

When I want to watch a movie on the PS3, I download it from Vuse and then just drag and drop the movie file into the PS3 icon in the program. When I then turn on the PS3, Vuse is an option and the movie I downloaded is ready to watch. Once I watch it, I delete it from my computer.

I've never stored anything other than game data on the PS3.

hate to dig up a week old thread, but what does everyone think of the PS3 Move ,

there are two versions of the PS3 I'm looking at - the 160GB version of 299, or the 320Gb w/ Move for an extra $100 , is the Move worth it?

The move is pretty freakin cool -- I haven't seen too many games for it yet though. For example when playing GT5 -- the camera with the move will detect your head movement and pan the view from within the car. :yesnod:
