Few night ago, a lady called 911 to report someone was rummaging through her neighbors car at 2:30am. A police cruiser responded, they ordered the man out of the vehicle, he put his hands up, stepped out of the car, then ducked back inside the car and picked up something, police officers ordered him to stop, but he continued and picked up the object then held it over his head.
Offocers saw it was shiny and metallic, they opened fire, putting I think 14 rounds in his direction, wounding him with a hit to the femur.
They approched anf found that he had ducked in and grabbed his keychain, with a flashlight on it..it was his car..he was out souring the vehicle looking for a late night cigarette...he is 60 years old.
The kicker..he was black, and the cops were white.
So, the officers are in deep shit, the sheriff has said it was Officer Anxiety...
I think, justified...you just DO NOT duck into a vehicle and grab something when the cops command you to grab some sky....right?

Thats my thinking. I mean, they rolled up, ordered him out, im sure they ordered him to show his hands..for all they knew he was a burglar. He gets out ,then moves back in, and grabs something...guy is damn lucky he aint pushin daiseys right now.

Shit like this makes me second guess running after dark.
As an american (regardless of race) i shouldn't have to worry about or second guess going for a run at 9pm.:spdchk:
Oh and his neighbor didn't know what her neighbor looks like? Really..

What did he do after it was over his head? Was he facing the officers? Did the officers tell him to drop the object? Was he acting aggressive/odd?
I'm not saying the officers didn't do the right thing, but I promise there is more to the story than we know.
P.S. The race of the citizen and officers is insignificant.

This doesn't sound right to me.
1. Officers don't open fire because they see something shiny and metallic. The amount of paperwork and BS for even an "accidental discharge" is insane.
B. Dead of night or not, how can they only get 1 hit out of 14 rounds at probably less than 20 yards?
III. If multiple officers fired, something more happened than him standing with his keys over his head.

We live in Marietta which is one of the burbs. I am one of 3 (that i know of) mixed race/black families in about a 90 home subdivision. The demographic is probably 85% white straight couples with a couple asian, and gay couples mixed in too. People here that know me are cool with me and are friendly.
I'm sure a few of the people that don't know me though probably just view me as a black male running though a nice neighborhood after hours and wonder if i am up to something. I run at night this time of year because it is hot. It was 90+ today. I wait til the sun goes down and it cools down before i head out and run 3-5 miles.
Here's a vid of my kid in my car. You can see the type of neighborhood i live in by the houses in the background. It's a legit concern.:yesnod:

I would imagine if you're out running in shorts and running shit it's probably all good. Run around the neighborhood with a hoodie and jeans hanging off your ass with your boxers showing and it's probably not good. Profiling? You bet.

Play stupid games.. win stupid lead.
FWIW.. the few times i have been pulled over (I know a different scenario) I turn off car roll window down, keep hands on the steering wheel. when they approach I inform them I have a weapon. You know why? Because cops are humans and if I am dealing with a cop who is tired, just had a violent altercation, had a similar situation go south I don't want that experience to be replayed on me.
If the cop tells you to not put your hands somewhere (probably a few decibles higher than normal conversation level) I would recommend that you not put them there or stop what your doing. most people don't want to die and there are enough videos of cops giving the benifit of the doubt and are dead for it.

Or wear dark clothes, pants hanging off your ass and keep looking over your shoulder. I'm sure no one will be suspicious

This could have been avoided easily. As I stated in another thread, if a cop gives me an order, I am doing it. No matter what it is.
As many of the COPS shows that I have watched, everyone that complies and follows orders is cuffed/released/arrested without incident. Those that don't comply are shot, tased or thrown to the ground forcefully.

They found 17 shells, he was only hit twice, and he was unarmed?
I agree with the fact that if you don't comply you're an idiot and are asking for it, but something just isn't right here.

I live in a neighborhood that has a very active watch,at a HOA meeting we discussed runners in our neighborhood after dark and early mornings and came up with the idea to buy orange T shirts with the subdivision name across the back and that would help identify them as neighbors. The HOA bought the shirts for any runners/walkers that wanted them, this helped with questionable peeps roaming at night.

Wouldn't put it past them to make that part up.

In a lot of neighborhoods an Orange shirt might be mistaken for an escapee..

It's hard to imagine a cop shooting for the hell of it.
I would think he gave off enough of the right signals for them to feel they had too.

I don't think they shot him for the fun of it, but do think it is possible they over reacted to his flashlight and keys.
They already assumed he was a perp before they got there..
Wouldn't be the first time someone got shot because they had a cell phone or something in their hand.
If his hands were up as he says, they could have at least waited till he tried to point the flashlight at them before shooting. :D

To be honest though, how big of a neighborhood do you live in where you don't recognize people who live around you?
I definitely don't live in a gated community, but I know most of the people who live within 10-12 houses of me by sight
