View Full Version : My search for a Triumph TR-6...

just took a somewhat positive turn. I asked a Triumph Club member to look at a car for me in his City, and he said he might sell his own. I asked what the price was, and what he said was reasonable...after I found out more about the car.

It's a 1976, original paint and interior (except carpets), and has every option offered: Both tops, overdrive, laminated windshield, redline tires. Less that 50K miles, has won two Best of Show at Regional meets. We talked again, and he says his wife is not quite ready to sell it, but it would definitely be on the market soon because a car can only win 5 years at regional meets and then has to be retired from judging.

Wish me luck! [This link may not work for you. It's a pdf, and those are impossible to copy/post to copy, unlike posting pics. If it does work, download the pdf (if it lets you) since the pics are worth seeing. BTW, I know that none of you would try to snake this car from me, but I do have a written agreement with the seller.]

Thanks for the compliments and wishes! The seller seems like a straight-up guy and didn't have any problem with give me the option to buy. Je has 2 other Triumphs, a 1964 with a surrey top and a 1957 that he's restoring. He's running out of room.

Everyone is nostalgic about cars, but this car is the same color combo and equipment (except the hard top) as the one I bought in 1978 and foolishly sold several years later. They are fun cars! Front disc brakes, quick rack-and-pinion steering, very balanced suspension. Surprisingly quick for a 100 HP car, 0-60 in under 10 seconds, about a 120 mph top speed. The overdrive is a very rare option and adds tremendous pleasure to driving the car.

The only way I won't get this one is if the seller never decides to sell. This car still has traces of the red oxide primer on the underside; the only time I've ever seen that was on a car where the owner re-sprayed the underside, thinking he was adding value to the car. All he did was destroy its survivor status.

Thanks again, everybody!

Hmmm, it is beautiful car but I perceive a problem.

I do not see any signs of leaks, drips, weeps, seeps of oil, brake fluid, transmission or differential grease, anti-freeze, or gasoline which leads me to believe that every fluid level is below a critical point and needs immediate re-filling.

I've owned my share of British products and every one leaked on a daily basis until there was nothing left to leak - such as brake fluid which can provide a definitely "sporty" ride!

So true about British cars! I have seen very few Triumphs that have been "sorted out", but this appears to be one of them. The engine and transmission in these cars are very durable, but they were plagued by Lucas electrical problems. Lucas was acquired by Prestolite Electric, an American company, in 1998. The electric parts being reproduced today are of far superior quality, and all gremlins can be fixed.

I think Lucas is one of the reasons that there is no car made in England today that is owned by an English company.

Good Luck Larry (and I mean that in a positive way) I hope you are able to get that one.
Sometimes I wish I would have never sold my 72 BMW 2002. Cars from a different era

Why don't the British make computers?

A: They haven't figured out how to make them leak oil!

JK, good luck. I love TR6's. :seasix::seasix:

When I saw the first pic I was going to suggest holding out for an older one without the rubber bumper guards, BUT - I scrolled down and man is that one clean car. Looks showroom new. I'd do it if the $ is right.

I had a 71 back in the mid/late 70s and aside from the Curse of Lucas, it was a great car to drive.

I'm definitely in the minority, but I prefer the bumper guards. Many, many owners of those cars removed the guards and regretted it later when the bumpers got dented. A lot of those owners threw away the guards and mounting brackets, and now you can't get them new. Even a set of 2 used, ragged guards sell for $200 without the mounts. Even then it's shot in the dark about what you're getting because the front and rear guards and left and right guards (and mounts) are different, and sellers and buyers often can't tell the difference.

Didn't know any of that but just remembered my old car having a the second bar above the main bumper and always liked that look.

I saw several nice TR6s at the Pittsburgh Vintage GP a couple weeks ago... Really made me want one.

Hope you can make a deal on it - it looks so perfect and it even has the hard top. :cert:

"If you are looking for a quality, fully restored TR6 this may be your car! "

Sure, except for under the hood being filthy, no rear "glass" in the top, the top looks old, and probably more things I cannot see in the pictures.

I have seen cars in that shape around here go for 7 grand.

The second bar above the bumper does make a good combination. The bars won't work on the 1975-1976 models because of U.S. safety regs that raised the front bumper height, and the bars blocked the headlights beams.

That makes for potent performance! You have to strenghten everything--front and rear suspension, frame, shocks--and add a larger radiator.

My old neighbor had one, but it had a 350. Car looked really weird with the beefed up suspension, and all the other crap you have to do to it. But it was SUPER fast.

I think Lucas is one of the reasons that there is no car made in England today that is owned by an English company.

A friend of mine worked for Lucas in England in the late 60's, and he would regularly get in trouble with his fellow workers for working too hard and producing more that he should have according to the union! He was threatened with a beating if he didn't SLOW down. No wonder with attitudes like that, that the quality sucked! :issues:

I had a secretary once who told my other secretary, "You're making me look bad! He doesn't expect us to work that hard." I fired her on the spot.
