:leaving:

It was the rod bearing, came unglued when I was mowing the lawn. Can I get my money back?

Did it make an easy to see inside viewing window in the block?

Oddly enough no, the cylinder wall, block, piston and crank are all fine.

:hurray:
There's a reason it came apart. Have any machinist friends that can mic ( measure ) the crank journal for out of round? No use putting in new parts only to have it happen again.

That is probably not a bad idea to have that checked as opposed to my visual non micrometer inspection.

:iagree: Crankshaft has to be hurt.

It is possible that it "grew" from metal fatigue ( Kohler rods are cast aluminum ) but it does need to be checked.

It has a .10 over piston in it and the walls look really clean I am wondering if they put the bearings in wrong when they overhauled it or something and they were not getting oil. Upon further inspection the surface of the bearings seem to have been overheated they have metal buildup on them. I guess my assumption that the crank is good because it looks fine may have been a bit premature.

You can get an easy $30.00 at the scrap yard for that bitch....:seasix:

On the connecting rod bearing cap, there is a hole. It is extremely important that the hole faces the camshaft so it gets oil. :yesnod:

Or it just self destructs and comes apart :willy:

You mean similar to what happened?

Made a good sound when it broke. I was more pissed that my lawn was half mowed but a couple hours and I tossed in the motor from my 214 that I am restoring right now.

They used to build high quality machines ( whether JD or IHC, plus others ). It's well worth the money to rebuild them as a comparible machine quality wise will run you well in excess of $3K :yesnod:

:iagree: Up until that little old 78 12 horse imploded I ran the snot out of it pulling dirt and gravel around my house working on my paver patio as well as a trailer with a pallet of bricks on it didn't even bat an eye on the hills. Now they sell them with 20+ horse and you could not even come close to the old ones if you have traction those suckers will pull the asshole out of an elephant. Plus I stole it for only $150 so I cant complain.

The 212 was originally for parts cause they said it didnt run, adjusted the valves some gas and ether and it fired right up. I have been using it since spring while I slowly work on the 214 when I have time. I also just scored a FREE!!! 37a snowblower today in very good condition to boot. Going to be a pretty sweet setup when its all said and done.

Ouch...went up nice.

inspect the cam for damage, as well as the bosses where the cam mounts, for cracks...not uncommon for the cam to take a hit and bend.

Rebuild with Genuine Kohler parts, often NAPA can get them a little cheaper, the aftermarket stuff, on Kohlers, aint worth the risk.
