Looking to rent a place near Tampa (30-40 mile radius) for the Winter months.
I'm aware of the drudge in some of that area and don't want to deal with that.
We are also considering further South toward Ft. Myers as well.

What areas should we consider that are near or on the water?

Waterfront condo might be nice as it would have a pool, maintenance etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lots of folks really like Bradenton/Sarasota. I have spent lots of time in Clearwater and love that area.

What weeks/ months are you looking at Scott?
Does it matter if you're on water or away from it a bit?

December through Feb.
I'd like to be on the water if the price is right but would consider other options if the other goodies look appealing.

December through February is when all the northern people come down to rent. The condo I'm living in which is a 2/2 for those months WILL fetch 4,000 a month. That in Naples. I honestly would only consider Naples and some surronding areas or Sarasota, and in Sarasota I would stick to Lido, Longboat, or Siesta keys.

What type of places are you looking for. And what activities are you looking to do when down here. That will ultimately narrow down where you should rent.

Don't hesitate to call Scott if you have questions on area

Definitely this ^

Gail and I have spent some time over there...great beaches and for the most part, quiet. As has been said, that will be prime season so it won't be cheap wherever you land.

Some of the prices are insane.

I can rent a nice place in the USVI for less.

The goal is to have a vacation home in a warm climate and I've got family in SC and FL.
SC gets cold as sheit in the Winter so I figured we'd look at FL.

Hell, at $4k+ a month I might be better off buying a place inland far enough I don't get whacked with the hurricane tax.

Thats what I did. We bought a place in Port St Lucie right in PGA village.

The problem with that area of the state is the very high population of blue hairs. You don't want to be on the road at 4 pm when the early bird specials start.

Oh and if you want to live on the cheap, buy a trailer in the keys for cash. http://keys.craigslist.org/reo/3939885064.html

Definitely looking to buy in that region; one of the reasons we thought we'd rent in areas to see if we like it.

I know the older folks are part of the deal. I've spent enough time in FL to know that much.

A trailer would be a cheapo, short term getaway but it's a bit off the beaten path for us in terms of major airports (will be flying every few weeks for biz) and that area is probably out of our price range for future purchase; although I haven't looked at the real estate there. :cert:

I would enjoy coming to visit that area sometime to get a flavor of the area.
My Dad and Step Mom take the boat to Key West for a month or two every year. We may jump in on a leg of that trip this year.

From where I live in PSL I am about 20 minutes form the Beach and just West of I95. Rentals ( yearly) start around 1500.00 per month.

If you like golf it's a great place to be.

Hey Scott,

Sorry I missed this thread. 30-40 mile radius from Tampa would certainly put you in the barrier islands of Sarasota (Siesta Key, Longboat Key, ...)

Siesta continues to be rated the #1 Beach in the United States. Personally I like Longboat Key better. I'm biased to it because my parents took me to it every year of my life (from Ohio).

One thing I don't like about Siesta Key is the fact that all of the restaurants of interest are inland, not on the water. There's a little square where all the action happens. The place to be is the Siesta Key Oyster Bar.

Longboat has more waterside restaurants, and quite frankly many more things to do.

As far as Fort Myers goes, it's not a beach town. We're a river town. You'd have to go to Fort Myers Beach to get water front, but that's too "college town" mentality.

Further south is Bonita Beach, and certainly Naples. Either of those would suit you just fine. As a Fort Myers resident, when I want to take my wife on a special "beach weekend", I rent a hotel on the beach in Naples. ;)

Naples has a TON of class and a TON of money. Lotta cool stuff down there.

Pick your poison, pick the area and pick your budget, because staying on the water can range greatly in cost.

Of everything I just mentioned, I'd personally stay on Longboat or in Naples. If proximity to Tampa is the most important, go with Longboat. :cert:

:iagree:

was just at siesta for 5 days, it was packed. Longboat doesn't seem to be as busy.... Siesta key oyster bar was awesome IMO, good eats

As i said above I live in Naples. It's very nice but very expensive. I'd personally live in sarasota. I'd be happy with siesta or longboat, whatever I could get a better deal on

Good information, thanks guys! :cert:

The prices for waterfront are ridiculous and more than much of the US Virgin Islands.
Seems most are priced to book for a week or 2 at most and not longer term.

We'd do the VI as we go there each year on vacation and know the areas well.
Just need to be near a major airport for biz and daughter flying in.

I'll keep digging around and find something.
