Island sees first baby born in 34 years
Midwives ferried in by boat to Ohio's South Bass Island
UPDATED 10:57 AM EDT Jul 22, 2013
A baby boy named Eli recently became the first baby born on an Ohio island in 34 years.
South Bass Island is a popular summer tourist destination often referred to as the "Key West of Lake Erie," but it also has no hospitals or any other facilities conducive to giving birth.
Still, lifetime resident Kira Hubner wanted her baby born in the island village of Put-In-Bay.
The family ferried in two midwives by boat, and precautions were taken in the event of an emergency, but Eli Edward Hayes Heineman came into the world healthy and without incident on June 1, according to Cleveland TV station WKYC.
"It was more than perfect," Hubner said of the birth. "There was a beautiful rainbow the second he was born."
The family has deep roots in Ohio. They own the Heineman Winery, which is the state's oldest at 125 years old.
