I need your opinions on this before I decide.
I have a customer that bought a digital download manual.
He sent me a letter demanding a full refund and claims that my PDF download link contained a virus.
I suspect he is making this up and has already downloaded the manual, and now just trying to get a freebie..
I Clearly state in FAQ pages at my website that there are no refunds on digital manuals
(for obvious reasons)
-----------------------------------------------------
His email
Thanks for the Malware. Please issue a refund to my Paypal account
--------------------------------
My first reply
I have no idea what you are talking about, but you most certainly did not
get any malware from me, or this pdf download.
---------------------------------
His reply
Your download also included QuickShare, which contained 2 viruses. If you
are unaware of it, you might want to do a little research. I was never able
to complete the download, and would like a refund.
---------------------------------
My reply
Hi XXXXX,
I have never had a complaint like this from anyone over any of my manuals.
But to be sure that nothing new has happened, and that the file has no
virus or malware, I downloaded it myself.
No warnings, and after downloading I ran an AVG Anti Virus Scan on the file,
(it contains no threats)
I am not sure why you are getting a warning message, but possibly you
already have the malware on your computer and you got it somewhere else.
I Googled Quickshare, and it does look like a nasty little bug to have, but
meanwhile while searching I found out that yes it is possible for a PDF to
contain a virus.
Something that I never believed to be true.... but see now that the free
adobe versions will not even allow a virus to run, so only the professional
versions can open it... if a file was in fact infected.
My research also found that even though it is possible, it is very remote
and not even much of a true risk.
Can a PDF document contain a virus? (http://www.enfocus.com/en/support/knowledge-base/can-a-pdf-document-contain-a-virus)
I suggest you google "pdf ebook", or "pdf manual", then go download any of
the free stuff that you find out there to see if you get another warning
message.
I can safely say that my manual does NOT have a virus, but to further make
you happy, I made a new pdf from jpg scans, and re-uploaded it for you as a
new download.
I have been meaning to do this sometime anyways as these scans are larger
and easier read, and will print more clear.
Here is the new download link for you below.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(and gave him a new download..)
----------------------------------------
This was the original download link
As I said, I downloaded it myself, and scanned it with AVG and it shows as no threats.
Anyone here want to test it also for me?
This is for the 1957 Corvette Fuel Injection
http://carburetor-manual.com/libro/Rochester-Fuel-Injection-1957.pdf
-----------------------------------------------
I sent the above letter to him a few days ago and did not hear back from him so figured that he got his new download and realized I was right, but he just sent a new email..
----------------------------------------------
His latest email
Please respond to my request for a refund within 24 hours to avoid negative feedback
Thank You,
---------------------------------------------
This is not an ebay deal, negative feedback? file a paypal claim?
post crap on a forum somewhere? :island14:
It is not a lot of money, only $7.99, and the issue I have is I just think he is just running a scam, and I hate to give in for that reason..
But possibly he did get a warning message, how can this be explained?
I get no warning messages, and as I said, I downloaded it, scanned it, and it shows as good with AVG
Your thoughts? :island14:
Give him a voucher for a free download :seasix:

Give him a voucher for a free download :seasix:
Like I said, I made a new PDF file, uploaded it and sent that to him also.
He has made no comments on my letter of follow up, and checking the file myself, just demands a refund.
if I really thought there were any truth to his statements, I would not even argue about it, I just think he is scamming so don't want to give in.

This is good and along with it, the explanation this is to avoid people who download, then claim its bad wanting a refund.
If not, send him a fkn virus on the next email and charge him for it!
Have him send his computer to you to inspect and clean of viruses.

I'm hoping a few of the IT guys here will test the link, or explain to me how he could get a warning message.
Who knows, I know the file has no virus, but maybe this guy really believes it does for some reason. :island14:
If he is truly bullshit and just a scammer, then maybe he needs a subscription to Cat Facts! :D :Jeff '79:

I'm sure there was no virus, but to answer the question, I guess I'd be curious to see how/where this is available for sale.
Meaning, what can he do to negatively impact future business? Is there any practical means for him to further this matter?
Edit: Nevermind, just looked at the site. I'd ignore it, he may dispute Paypal, but as long as you can provide proof of delivery, he faces a difficult battle with them and will likely give up before ever seeing his $8 back.

I have never had anyone complain about that ever! this guy is a first.

Anyone here I have always sent stuff to for free when asked, or I see a need.
What could he do? file a claim at Paypal, maybe get his money back, not likely as they do not give refunds on digital items.
Possibly he could make negative comments on a forum somewhere, other than that... nothing that I can think of.

Small chance he'll dispute it with Paypal.

All joking aside, I'm thinking that if he is not just making this story up, and truly believes it..
He has malware already that he got somewhere else, and he will get warning messages now and then until he pays them to remove it, or he figures out it's a scam and removes it himself.
I had malware once years ago that I couldn't remove, but turned it off in the startup menu so never saw it again.

same thing for a 96 Chebby Silverado P/U...extended cab with all the bells and whistles....shit I"d just love to find the ****ing Nader beepers to cut the bells of that bastard.....annoying CRAP....

If you give him a refund, he will see it as you admitting you gave him the virus, then he will seek compensation for that. It will never end. I would just ignore him at this point. I'm sure he has others he is working similar scams on. He will seek out those who comply with him in any way and go after them.

I knew a guy years ago that use to call all the 1-800 numbers on cans, and cartons of about anything to complain about things he made up.
I think he told Campbells Soup he found a fly in it, stupid stuff like that...
It was like a hobby to him. :confused5:

I started off with a just few large manuals and divided it into info that was specific to peoples needs for their own Cars.
Sold it as reprints on ebay then eventually scanned and went digital since the mail times are so slow from here.
Over time I kept buying original manuals on ebay scanning them, and added to my library.
Since then I have also took in a lot of other peoples stuff in trade, swapping cost me nothing and it is always nice to get new things for my collection.
Also find some stuff in torrents now and then, after awhile no one is seeding anymore so I'm the last guy to have it. :)
Eventually I will make a new site and give everything away free, and just take the Adsense income from the Ad clicks.
For now we still need it to buy rice, and pay the bills. :D
I still have a huge library of original manuals, and need to sell them off as I have no need for them once scanned.
Many are too large to be worth the high cost of shipping.. so will probably end up as fire starters for the cook stove.
