Ive been on, probably a half dozen forums over the past 3 weeks trying to get help as to why my truck idles too high, Ive replaced components, sensors, computers...and never got any change. Id decided that it was a computer chip, demanding high idle, but no one would listen, in person, on the phone, or online, that this is an option..that, prom chips do not go bad.

Well, after over 3 weeks of going back and forth by phone and email with a chip tuner, I FINALLY got him to send me a stock prom chip...and voila..idle is fixed. I had a bad Prom (memcal)..and it for whatever reason was idling over 1000 rpms, regardless of sensor input.

So, if anyone ever comes upon a problem where you cant get to a scanner, and you have a problem that yo ucant explain by doing tests...do not rule out the chip/computer. If Id done what others were telling me, id have a new throttle body, fuel pump, intake, more sensors, etc....and be about a grand poorer...and still not have it fixed..haha

Its a major relief, ive lost alot of sleep over it, sadly. Ive got like 4500 in the truck so far and still havent been able ot drive it to the DMV. As soon as I got the new trans in, I discovered the idle problem, and its been weeks on that. Now, new windshield, new ignition cylinder, new shifter cable, and put a radio in it, and it will be done beyond popping some dings out and a good wax job...

damn right, because the fix was something relatively simple, and cheap... not "I took it to the dealer and they had it a month, and it cost 3800 to fix it"

It's not really that unusual for a prom to go bad. Probably more misdiagnosed than anything. 95-96 were the last years for OBD-1. The chips still weren't overly complex and for a bad spot on the chip to occur and create a condition is really not unreasonable, especially for almost 20 year old electronics.

A guy at my office had the same symptoms. His was a connector that came loose from the power steering pump. Crazy.

Guy in NC, Brian Harris. tbichips.com. His record is spotty, alot of bad word of mouth advertising, but..he only took 2 tries to get it right for me, on a bne stock tune...lol
