Enough people own or want tablets and enough cars have displays, why doesn't one of the big three make a display that you remove when you exit the car and it is your tablet? Get back in the car and pop it in place. It will then work as a nav unit, stereo, etc. and recharge itself.

You're welcome.:kimblair:

They all fit. Standardize all auto tablets.

It doesn't control your car although I guess it could carry a "tune" HA ! It controls you music, your nav system, etc. It's an entertainment console.

Assuming they keep the interface the same it'd be fine. :)
interface, form factor, accessory compatibility.

I don't trust any of them to do that...

Seems to work for DVD, BluRay, TV,...

I don't see 8 different types of HDMI cables.

Naysayers...look out SharT Tank, here I come ! :D

I wish they would sell the car with as little electronics as possible and just give me a place to plug in my own device. All the electronics in cars are way overpriced and will be obsolete long before the car wears out. How many people paid over a grand for the nav in their '05 Corvettes only to see soon that a garmin was better for a fraction of the price.

This is the solution. The Autotablet. Fits any vehicle, updates, upgrades, just pop it in the dash and go. It would run on CAR Windows format.

I just need a name...

Because no matter how cutting edge the device is, it will be hopelessly obsolete in a year or two. Been there done that. I once owned an IBM PC that was supposedly the last PC I would ever have to buy. They built it so the chip on the motherboard could be upgraded as they got faster and faster. Of course, entire motherboards and chip technology changed within a year so that no one made compatible chips any more. Same thing happened with a car I bought in the 90's. It came with a built in phone. They said that upgrading to a new phone would be as easy as buying a new cradle. It was a brick phone. It was the coolest thing for about six months before brick phone technology became obsolete. Nothing you can think of now will be compatible with any tablet just a few years from now.

The tablet would not be mnade by them. It would be sold as part of the car OR if you already have one, use your own. The critical part is that there is a form designed that allows any/all tablets to fit the dash and be used as a nav or stereo when in place and a tablet when unplugged. Remember the adapters that held VHS-C tapes ina full sized cartridge? There could be a form for different tablets and you pop that in and done.

Don't squash my creative juices people. I'm creating a dream !!

Something close is an Android tablet with the Torque app. The app has TONS of gauges you can customize, in tons of different layouts.

Ok, let me take another shot at this using real world stuff.

GM says, Hey Apple, we want to use a removable tablet as our new nav and sound system core. We want our customers to be able to use this tablet outside the vehicle. Develop something this size __________ and with a connector like this ________________ and locate that connector here “X” and we will put whatever you come up with in every one of our 2016 vehicles. If our customers do not WANT a tablet, we will install in that same docking position, a simple nav/stereo/back up cam. Can you do that Apple?”

Apple says Heck yeah we can do that. We’ll be in every GM car outstanding. The Ford hears about it and says “Awesome idea, but we hate APPLE. Motorola, can you make a Droid device that fits in this size space (same as GM) , with this same connector, and locate the connector here (same place as GM). Motorola says heck yeah we can do that. And every Ford has the option of a tablet OR a basic nav/stereo/back up cam. Now vehicle owners can take their tablet from GM and if they buy a Ford in two years, plug it in and use it. The basic nav /stereo/ back up cam can be replaced at any time with a tablet of your choosing as long as it is an automotive tablet. Move the basic system to another car and use the tablet. etc. All interchangeable.

Automotive tablets would be their own market, interchangeable from car to car, upgradable as a PC is. They can be purchased with different memory, with or without 4G or wireless. Use your current provider. Apps could be added for garage door openers etc.

I think this is gold man.

Yeah sure, but while Beta and VHS are duking it out for who gets into what car, someone will come along with something like the DVD which will render both platforms hopelessly obsolete.

You're about 5-7 years too late. Like I said, people are already invested in the ecosystem of their choice. Adding another one isn't going to be worth the cost to develop this.

What the auto industry is doing is working on getting things syncing with current platforms (Andriod and Apple for the most part).

Just my .02.
