Been without one for 3 summers. Spent most of the day mowing. Great Craiglist find and 4 miles from the house.

JOHN DEERE LX176 REDUCED (http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/grd/3935017510.html)

Red can't see my shaft :nono:

It's a real John Deere not a MTD sold at Lowes or Hone Depot.

Get rid of the mulching baffle at the discharge chute. Unneeded, puts a lot of strain on the engine. That model has a weakness, but you can avoid it if you're careful: The deck is suspended from the frame by a Mickey-Mouse system; if you try to mow too close to a post and the deck hits the post, the mounts welded to the top of the deck literally peel the metal back.

A new deck and improved mounts cost as much as you paid for the mower.

Nice buy!

Nice buy!:seasix: I had one of the same vintage but larger frame and larger mowing deck. :yesnod:

Had a service do it for awhile, couldn't afford it. Neighbor has been doing it when he could since. It was so deep one time last year we had to get it bush hogged. :( :island14:

So YOU are the neighbor everyone else just looks at and shakes their head at.

Funny thing about this topic, I was working clearing a PPL right-of-way near Baytown. Homes right on the bay (ocean access waterfront) had unkempt yards, a couple of them even had vines growing on the houses and on the a/c units. Damn. If you can afford to live in a waterfront home, at least mow your damned grass. I would kill to live in a house on the water (although it would suck during hurricanes).

Thanks...:seasix: May your crotch be infested by the fleas of 1000 camels....I don't live in a neighborhood I live wayyy the fck out in the country. The only neighbors I have is my Bro in law across the road, Martha's cousin that lives beside us and the neighbor I paid to mow that's behind us.

I was pulling vines and think I got into some sumac today. I had a spot on my arm that looked like it had a chemical burn. Burned like crazy and didn't get any better when I washed it off. It's still slightly red even now, hours later. No fleas though. Karma?

BTW I got stung by a yellow Jacket on top of my right foot :cuss: Damn little stinging bastard. :cuss:

Those little bastards hurt as much or more than a large wasp. If you can find their underground nest, park you mower on top of it...running.

The deck hangers are not too bad, only seen a couple LX100's with problems like that. The more pressing issue is the sudden and unexplainable tendency for the engine to overheat and backfire...

10 years Ive done this, and there have only been 3 mowers Ive failed to fix..and all of them were Deere LX176's...all with the same symptoms. Cranks right up, runs great for a second ,then bogs and misfires loudly, loses power, wont rev up, exhaust glows.....Ive checked timing, replaced coils, igniter modules, replaced carbs...have yet to have one "fix"...and no one is willing to pay me to pull it off the frame and check for a damaged or failed camshaft...

Good mower though...really smooth cutting.

Also, MTD does not make the mowers are box stores, never have. Deere actually makes the L, LA, D, and G series riders, but NOT in the Horicon facility...

I am seriously considering that. If I do my own cutting; I need a commercial quality mower to hold up for any length of time.

The cost of buying a commercial mower, along with gas & maintenance... it's not that much of a money saver anymore. Especially since I have two friends (that cut lawns as a second job) who have recently offered to cut & trim my 1.5 acre lot for $55.

Though, it would need be done weekly for the first 3 months of the season, then every week & half/2 weeks for the remainder of the season.

My current mower:
http://www.usfarmer.com/fetch_file/?id=920498

cost me 5K new, back in 199x. I'd hate to see what it's replacement would cost today
