a.t 3:30 in the morning to find my position has been eliminated. :toetap:
After 12 years at the Home Depot (former contractor for 25yrs.) they decided my current position will go away Feb 18th. :kick:
They offered a few choices to the 3 of us affected.
1. Accept a full time position to be determined AFTER I decide to stay. This position requires me to be available 24hrs per day 7 days a week. :skep:
2. Current position gets re-named and is now part time. approximately 20-25 hrs per week.
3. Quit :toetap:
Sooo I'm leaning towards leaving the 12 years behind and starting fresh at my buddies thriving company.
We are sitting down NEXT Friday when he gets back in town to iron out the details. Not concerned with money, more concerned with health care.
By the way in case I have NEVER said this before, let me say it now.
Hey HOME DEPOT, BLOW ME! :slap:

Can you just quit the full time position once you find out what it is? Btw, I contracted with them for a little while at their corporate headquarters and they suck to work for IMO.

Hey HOME DEPOT, BLOW ME! :slap:
Did they give the business reason for doing this? Is your part of the company losing money?
It surely doesn't sound like they want anyone staying on full time since that will now be 24/7!

It just chaps my ass that they think so little of us to do this to us. There are not many of us in this position, maybe a few thousand of us at most. Just the point that everything is a friggen surprise. You would figure that 12 yrs with a company would mean something BUT apparently not.

It surely doesn't sound like they want anyone staying on full time since that will now be 24/7!They are making it a part time entry level position. That means in my store they can remove the 3 of us and hire on 6 people to replace us. It makes good financial and business sense.
For years I have worked Mon-Fri 4am to 1pm. Now in order to even be employed I must sign a form stating that my availability to HD will be 24/7 or else I get no job. WTF kinda shit is that? :beat:

Sounds like you've got a plan with your buddy. Hope that works out for you.Me too, he was my Store manager a few years ago and we remained close friends when he was promoted to customer for telling the District Manager she sucked.

Not nice for sure.
I remember when Sears changed their long term employees to part time, or at least just under the number of hours where they'd have to give them benefits. It's a cruel corporate world when companies do such.
Will HD provide benefits for you if you're not full time?
I'm glad you have another option, and hopefully it will work out better for you! Does your friend's company have health benefit coverage available?

It's a double edged sword-They pay you enough not to lose you then eventually you make too much so they replace you.

As for my friends company, he has good health care. I know because we discussed it when he set up the company. Only has about 30 employees so the cost may be relatively high. I'll hash that out with him next week. He's been trying for 2 years to get me over there. I'm sure we will come to terms as we're not talking mega bucks here. 50K, health benefits, holidays, paid vacations. Nothing big to speak of at all.

Tell them you can't be available 24/7 because when you are not at work you are usually drunk. If that would work I assure you I would. If you are not available 24/7 you are NOT employable according to the company. What is odd is that the store is only open until 9pm. They schedule you to 11pm. WTF do I need to be available to a retail store 24/7? Makes no sense other than to piss people off. :kick:
I also work for HD. I have been with them for 14 years. I heard that this morning and I thought that is the same thing every year. Somebody thought up a different way to save money and shoved it downhill. We have two full timers, and there making a three part time job. I am leaving HD in 98 days, Good luck to you and don't look back.

Sad to do their long term employees that way. :(We will. Yes it does suck, they just don't give a shit. This was once a great company where only 2 things mattered, EMPLOYEES and CUSTOMERS. Now it's all about Wall Street and nothing else matters.
And good luck with those self serve cashier lines. I HATE those things.A shit load of people complain about them. Again, nobody gives a rats ass. 4 lines with only 1 cashier, brings me back to the Wall Street comment above.

In the old days, you worked for a corp and did a good job - you were loyal
to them and they were loyal to you.
For more than a decade now, the corps still wants you to remain loyal, but
they will outsource and downsize your azz in a heartbeat.
Most starting in the job market these days will probably work for more than
a dozen companies during their careers.

I was offered a 6 figure job in El Segundo, CA that would require me to live down there (I lived up near Bakersfield at the time) during the week and be on call 24/7. I asked, "Even if I'm out in Santa Monica Bay on my sailboat, I'd have to come in?"
Their response: "Yes."
Me: "You'd more likely find the pager at the bottom of the bay."
Thus endeth the interview.
I love a good paying job doing things I love, but when it costs me time with my family, it ceases to be worth it.
I do NOT live to work. I work to live my life with my family and do the things in life that matter. I'd much rather be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and friend than a good worker who sacrificed everything for the company.
I'm fortunate now to work in a position making decent pay, but also affords me a LOT of time with my family. The company encourages it.
I need to get an eye exam. I thought the title of this thread was "So I throw up at work today".
But seriously, that sucks. Exotix is right - companies demand loyalty today but they aren't loyal to their people anymore. They expect at least a 2 weeks notice when you resign but yet they will walk you out the door as soon as you give them your resignation, too.
Glad to hear you have something else lined up. Keep the Depot job until you get the confirmation that you have the other job. Trust me, being unemployed sucks and it's a lot easier to get another job when you have one than to get a job when you're not working.
So much for the Respect Wheel. They won't and don't care about you or your job. Did'nt you just interview for that job about a year and half ago when they let six of the IMA's go. Writing is on the wall after they introduced the First Phone.

I still have a couple weeks left before I move to the new job soooo, Today was review everything I could with the new DH of electrical since I know darned well my mind is drifting from "doing the right thing" :D
Any job (family biz withstanding) you are just numbers on paper. Nothing more and nothing less. If you become less profitable or useful, you're done.
If you can find a way, start working for yourself. :)

Home Depot is terrible to work with. I supplied them with washers for a few years and had to stop because of their return policy. Instead of renting a unit, cheap assholes would buy my machine, wash their house, then return it no questions asked. I then had to take that machine back.
Returns exceeded 40%.
Learned my lesson. No more contracts with the big box stores.

Forgot, they also made us contribute to their NASCAR team. They don't put a dime into that program, its all paid for by the vendors who sell through Home Depot.
