My wife had off work today so we were on our way to the park to walk our new puppy Levi. As I'm in between the two "S" curves, a guy on a Honda V twin locks up the back brake and misses the corner. Just went straight at about 20 mph into somebody's lawn.
Since the V-twin isn't known for it's motocross capabilities, the front end washes out and he wiped out.
I pulled into the lawn ( out the road to allow any traffic that might come past ) and check him out. He's up, holding his right shoulder and says " I didn't know the corner was there". (There is a sign marked 20 mph ) ( in his defense, the electric wires do go straight at that corner there. Plus the corner is at a slight crest of a hill )
He can move alright and other than sore seemed fine. We get the bike up and the only damage was the RR turn signal and the left mirror got torn off. The gas tank had a nice dent on the back right side.
He said he was OK, put the loose parts in his backpack and off he went.
If he would have stayed just slightly right the bumps wouldn't have thrown him off. Luckily he didn't go 8' further to the left as there are trees there.
Looking at the picture, he was coming from the bottom and when he realized the road turned, he jammed on the back brake only.
He was going slow enough initially if he would have applied the front brake he would have made it easily.
But, he didn't :slap:

Bet he's a newbie and hasn't taken the MSF course... or he's only ridden dirt... and hasn't taken the MSF course.

You're probably right. His shoulder was hurting and I didn't say "you would have made the corner if you used the front brake".
But I really wanted to :leaving:

Grabbing front brake in a corner is asking for it. If I'm going into a corner a little hot, trail brake lightly and countersteer like a Mofo!
That guy was lucky. :cert:

He was skidding straight for a good 75' to 100'. Plenty of time for the front binder. He screwed up :yesnod:

It sounds stoopid, but every year I take my bikes out I do a few quick stops to reacquaint myself with hauling a 800# pig to a stop.

It's not stupid. It's common sense to get reaquainted on how the machine works. My first "spring time ride" is still a few months away. I'll have to do the same thing. :yesnod:

Yeah, always need to shake the rust off the rotors and the nut holding the handlebars.

I read stories like this and just can't even comprehend the whole "no front brake" thing.

Folks afraid of the front brake will dump, I'm convinced. 99% of my "Normal" riding uses the front.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself..

I'm 51. I'm allowed to be a little overweight, it's in the rule book.
With my sport bikes, about the only thing I do use is the front brake. I am not even sure that the rear brake on my Aprilia works. But then again, turning is not generally an issue with a sport bike.

Even with my '93 ZR1100, I use the front brake most. The back brake is only used going slow for extra stability.

With a big heavy bike, you tend to drag the rear brake a lot.

What about excess speed in the corners? What's your method for scrubbing off some speed?

Yes, it's used then but I try not to ride faster than my guardian angel can fly :yesnod:

Me too. But once in a while I find myself rolling along a little quick. :D
About the only time I'd use the rear brake is on a dirt bike. I DID learn the hard way on my first crotch rocket, but was still careful enough to ride on back roads during little to NO traffic times of day.
Ironically, I laid it down exactly where my father FLIPPED his Chevelle back in the 70's. I scratched my bike, he totaled his Chevelle. :(
Point being, I grew up on dirt bikes and street bikes are the exact opposite when it comes to handling. Nobody ever told me that though!:issues:

I typically use just the front for around town with a little rear but if I am hauling down from a higher speed I use both equally to keep the nose from diving too hard.

Does the new bike have anti dive forks?

No idea, but it has WAY better brakes than my Yamaha so I am still getting used to it. Dual Brembos in front, single Brembo in back compared to my sinlge front disc/ drum brake rear Yamaha.
Does the new bike have anti dive forks?
Seriously? Is that a joke? From the pic in your av, I'd have to ask!

When I bought my Valkyrie and was taking it home I straightend out an interstate off ramp 5 miles from the dealer...
Passed a double bottom gravel truck just before the exit because I didn't want to get my new bike dinged up following it (and no windshield yet). Went from doing the speed limit to 105 in the length of the truck. Holy schitt that thing is fast. Might have been able to hold the curve (last thing I saw on the indicator was 80 and it's marked 25) utilizing the shoulder but it was covered in marble sized gravel (from those damn trucks) so I just stood it up and went down the embankment.
The trucker also took the exit and as I looked back at him once I got it stopped he was laughing his ass off at me. I had baseball sized chunks of mud all over me and the bike, I'd have laughed too if I wasn't worried about getting back up that damned muddy embankment
