.....dropping 450 $amolians to get this. It's all good though, thought I didn't need one either. Home is only 6 years old, didn't realize how dirty the sidewalks got. I have my work cut out for me now....but, but, but, I'm retired........

Took some advise from the thread, made sure I got a horizontal set-up, Triplex pump, 3100 psi, works great, as you can see.

Left a spot to show non-believers. :D

Its not a Triplex pump, its a 3 piston axial pump. Still not a bad price on it, should last a good long while, dont let it freeze, dont let chemicals get into the inlet side of the pump, use a filter/washer on the inlet to keep shit out...

The name "Triplex" was on the advertisement placard at Lowes advertising this washer. It has the name Annoni Reverberii on the pump, so I suppose it's a good one.

That's AR's residential grade pump. Its designed to last about 40 hours. For residences, that may be a few years use. For commercial work, it would be shot in about two weeks.

Indeed, its a step up over a vertical shaft unit with an axial pump...but for heavy usage, they dont usually hold up. That said, ive got people using them commercially for 2-3 years with no problems. The design is sound, and most failures seem to be unloader valve and "lack of water" related.

You can always tell an axial pump, because it will be shaped like yours, with the brass on the end, with the 3 valves arranged in a triangle.

A Triplex pump, will resemble a 3 cylinder inline engine, it will have a "Case" and a brass manifold off to one side, with the 3 vlaves in a line.

A triplex pump is alot like a 3 cylinder engine, the pistons and bores are all in a row, and the shaft runs off the crank, and either has what appears to resemble a camshaft that spin and actuates the pumps, or an accentric shaft..that operates connecting rods, and actuates the pistons.

An axial pump has the pistons sitting in an oil bath, and the engine drives a plate that "wobbles"...permanently, it spins, and pushes the pistons up one at a time....it works, but I find its not as smooth, and it seems to be prone to wearing faster. For instance...Triplex pumps usually have an expected rebuild life of 2000+ hours ,and hold like..12 ounces of oil. Whereas an axial pump has an expected life of 50 hours, and holds 2-3 ounces of oil.

Again..you got a good pump...and it will serve for years if cared for.

What to do when a pump goes out on something that only needs to be residential grade? Briggs/Troy-Bilt vertical shaft. Pretty sure the unloader crapped out. Are there decent replacement pumps that are less than a whole new washer?

Set the thing up on a bench, and pull the unloader, if its the external style.

These are disposable units. Unless you do it yourself, it will cost more to fix than a new one. Commercial grade cold water units start at about a grand and go up in price quickly.

I just (about 5 minutes ago) put a brand new AR 4000psi/4GPM pump on an 11hp Honda engine I built last year for a customer...personally, I think its going to be more pump than the engine can handle...but he insisted.

Id have gone 3500/3.5 TOPS....

Sure is pretty though..

Hope that is dirt and grime, and not concrete sealer you blasted off.

I like belt drives, but I had a number of clients trade them in for Direct drives because its a bitch when you are right at the end of a job, and the belt frays, or breaks and you are SOL for the day.

Ive got many many hours on my Direct drives, in fact ive onkly ever seen one DD fail atthe coupler, and it was a result of improper installation....the adapter wasnt flush due to some debris, and the coupler was in a bind..after 4-5 years it finally split the collar.

Ok. Then what? I've had the whole bloody thing apart and found nothing apparent wrong with it. Made sure everything was clean, fired it back up and it would pulse with pressure, but never full pressure.

Oh, I would do it myself. And the number of running, but not-in-use small engines around my house is starting to stack up. If I junk this thing, that'll be 2 old power washer engines, a generator engine, and a 23hp mower engine.

If it pulses when running, usually that means one or more check valves in the manifold has failed, typically they are plastic and blow out...

More like consistently low pressure with the periodic pulse to something higher. Not a high-low surging.

That's why a contract cleaner always has a extra belt.

I've sold more than 40,000 pressure washers. Our repair / warranty issues are more than 3 times higher on direct drive units than belt drive. The wear and tear on a DD unit is significantly higher. Belt driven units offer much more give and take. Plus a lot less vibration.

When an older DD unit fails, many times its fused to the motor and the service center can not separate the two. They end up scrapping the whole unit.

I can get any pump off in 45 minutes...Done it a hundred times. I take a hammer and bust off the adapter. Then use a 4.5" side cutter to split the pump case, and hammer it in half. Then use the side cutter to split the hub and cold Chisel it off. I buy these things for 35-50 bucks with Honda GX engines..if the pump is bad, I remove the pump and sell the engine for 300 bucks...
