View Full Version : Car touch screen on the blink...again

I've recently had lots of trouble with the in-dash touch screen on my car. About 2 months ago it decided to go blank, just a black screen with an intermittent flash of the Jaguar emblem. When that happens there is no radio, adjustment of A/C vents (dash or floor), navigation, etc. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty module, and said the it might be neccesary to eventually replace the scrreen.
That fix cost over $1,000 and lasted 2 weeks. Everything shut down again, the dealer replaced a different module (another $900). Now, in 3 weeks it's doing it again.
The dealer is an idiot of course; it seems they're just replacing random stuff hoping to get lucky. On the other hand, I don't know if an independent garage could do any better. Anyone have any ideas?

You've paid $1,900 to "fix" an issue that still isn't working correctly and the dealer is the idiot? :leaving:

On a serious note, if I had already spent $1,900 to fix an issue at a dealer and it still didn't work, I'd be raising hell until it was fixed with no additional expense.
How old is the car?

That goes without saying. I'll be on the dealer and the factory like white on rice. In the meantime, the car needs to be repaired. Raising hell with them or even sueing them doesn'r mean they can fix the car. Any ideas what's wrong?

That sucks, many dealerships do only throw parts at the cars. Call a specialist to see if they're familiar with your particular problem, or search the internet to see if it's a common problem.

Other than DPFI on any car, I fail to see the need for all this built in electronicus crappicus.....I dread the day I have to fix any of the electronics shit on the truck or wife's car....it's over rover.....the truck had a 1/4 amp drain on the battery with everything off, traced to a fuse called 'lighting', I stuck a heavy relay in the circuit, and cut/bent the fuse relay triggered by IGN.....hell with it, tear the whole damn truck apart trying to find what ever....screw THAT, fixed right there at the underhood fuse panel, this is the second chebby pickup I have had to do something similar to.....
I even carry a spare computer in the back of the vette, just in case.....
:issues::issues:
Sorry I have no clue as to your shituation except maybe a connector, or a bad ground wire....if you can get the damn thing out yourself, maybe massage or tap around see if you can get it to come back on, bang on the dash a bit with you fist....don't have to stomp hell outta it, just vibrate hell outta it like a rough road would do....:seasix::shots:

Same here, and I was very disappointed to see Jaguar go the digital route. In the past they're always kept to simplicity: Speedo, tach, actual gauges. And they felt like the driver had the good sense to put on his seat belt without a chime every 10 seconds. No longer.
Now the only dash gauge is a gas gauge--no temp, oil, ammeter gauge, etc. I can tell a lot about something about to go wrong on a car by keeping an eye on the gauges, like a consistently low oil pressure, temp gauge a bit hotter than usual, ammeter shoing a discharge.

The dealer is likely still your best bet at this point, especially if you are going to be on them like white on rice. You're a lawyer, lay your case out to them and ask why you should be satisfied with what they have accomplished so far. They won't have a good answer that lets them off the hook. The car isn't old enough yet where they can't get factory support in finding the problem. Or, alternatively, you can go in and yell and swear at them and tell them you are going to sue them and have them just tune you out. I doubt anyone on here can diagnose your Jag over the internet.

There isn't much I can add that MV didn't cover.
Try to look outside the box for something as simple as a loose pin in one of the plugs. If that doesn't work, set it on fire inside the dealership and the world is a better place.

U should see the brace of gauges I have on the motor home, trans oil pressure, pan temp, plus all the rest of the usual engine gauges....even a lockup light for the converter, and the gauges are all on a panel on top of the dash, right up there easy to see in the line of sight, like GOD intended.....

Sorry, but it's true:
NEW YORK (2009)— Jaguar and Buick surged to the top of J.D. Power and Associates' closely watched vehicle dependability study this year, tying for the No. 1 spot and dethroning Lexus for the first time since the Japanese luxury brand has been a part of the survey.
Lexus, Toyota Motor Corp.'s luxury brand, took the next spot in the study released Thursday, followed by Toyota's namesake brand, then Mercury, Infiniti and Acura.

"Initial" quality and long term quality are light years apart. Sorry, Jaguar sucks, it always has, and likely always will. Ford made improvements to the brand, but not enough to make it a contender. Low volume will always plague the marque.
Sad thing is Jaguar has some of the sexiest lines on the planet.
Unfortunately, economics eventually come into play. Our dear friends' parents bought a brand new Jag in '07 for over $70K, drove it for 3 years, and ended up giving it to the kids, because it was worth less than $18K. They replaced it with a Lexus. ;)
I don't care who you are, but that depreciation hit is brutal, and there's a reason for it.

Depreciation for a Jaguar are no worse than almost any other car. If your parents' friends 2007 was worth only $18K after 3 years, something was dreadfully wrong with it. I have a 2007 XK that listed out at about $75K. They're still worth about $30K-$35K...and it's 6 years old.
Checking NADA, a 2010 Jaguar XK has an average retail of $42,450. A 2010 Lexus LS460 has a retail of $42,625. Both are about 60% of the new price.

I'm a member there, and I saw that thread. Problem is, my problem always happens when I first start the car in the morning, so overheating isn't likely the culprit. Unless, of course, overheating from the previous day is staying in the car's computer. Possible, I suppose.

Yeah, that does seem a bit hard to believe. Just for shits, park it in the garage with windows down to make sure it's cool in the morning.
What about battery? When's the last time you had the battery "soft reset"? or replaced?
Complete guess but...
Maybe you have overheated it, and a battery reset is required after that fact.

To be fair, that's likely a correct statement. American cars have not always been well-built...and just like the Europeans, Japanese, and Koreans, we still make some real bone-headed crap for cars at times. Most Jaguar parts are made in Germany, which has a good reputation for precision but spotty quality in the real world. Witness Mercedes and BMW reliability...don't own one out of warranty.

It usually means disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes and then hook it up again. It's basically rebooting the electronics.

With ign off, and all lights unlit, be interesting to measure any current being pulled from the battery, have to disconnect one cable and put your current meter in series of the two open terminals, and see what the drain is, it should not be over .020 amps......20 ma.....if it is, there is something rong....
