Inviting specific friends to join you on another forum is not spam.
Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. Source: Spam (electronic) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Spammed-mail-folder.png" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/56/Spammed-mail-folder.png/300px-Spammed-mail-folder.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/5/56/Spammed-mail-folder.png/300px-Spammed-mail-folder.png
Electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited e-mail. However, if a long-lost brother finds your e-mail address and sends you a message, this could hardly be called spam, even though it's unsolicited. Real spam is generally e-mail advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. Say Navy, you need to relax, delete your last post that is if you want to remain a member over there. This is really simple, either an admin went into your PM box or the guy you pissed off sent a PM to a mod. Either way I wouldn't get yourself all bunched up unless of course you want to say goodby to CF.

(Jesse and Jim, it is illegal for you to be reading private messages. If you ban me for this message you will hear from my lawyer).
:D
Just so you know, as per the ECPA, it can be legal for the employees of an online service provider to read your private messages, but either of the following requirements must be met:
-While engaged in the normal required performance of their jobs
-For the protection of the rights or property of the provider of the service
The statute further restricts how such exceptions may occur, specifying that “service observing” and “random monitoring” may only be carried out for mechanical or quality control checks.
This goes for any site, as long as you're engaged in interstate commerce. I suppose the use of an internet forum might fulfill that requirement.

Don't be fooled. :) We've gone through this numerous times before, there is and always will be certain people with access to the PMs. The only thing "private" about a PM on an Internet board is that the public members don't get to see the content. You're using someone else's servers, and basically agree to no right to privacy when you register.

Only to those who think its a well kept secret. I think I've known that PMs were being read there since about week two.
I've only had a few instances where it was an issue - but what REALLY pissed me off was during a disagreement with Jesse and Pewter several years ago some of the PMs where the admins were not terribly professional and/or said things they wished they had not - those PMs, nearly a months worth, mysteriously disappeared from my PM box.
That, I didn't know they could do.

so looks like I owe some apologies around the board here.
The mods/admins did not secretly read people's PMs -at least in this case
I was the one that snitched on you.
It wasn't "on purpose" nor did I have any ill intent.
you see, I rarely, if ever, get PM's. I can honestly estimate that in the all the years PM's have been on CF, I've got maybe 30. a few of those Spam, "inviting" me to view pics at Deal of the Week from whatever.com (http://www.whatever.com) or something similar. So yeah, when I saw a PM from a member whom I didn't recognize, I put up my red flag. I didn't think anything of it until the day I posted the thread about it, since I had received another spam pm that day.
The mod on CF asked me to forward the pm's to him, and I did.
I am honestly sorry for doing that.
I am usually pretty transparent with my comings-and-goings, but I guess not this time.
I really f-d this one up, big time.

Whether or not it's illegal to read the PMs depends on many factors, and is still very much a grey area.
One aspect is that it may be illegal in one state and not in another. Another is federal laws on the subject, which are still somewhat vague. Courts have decided for and against. However, generally speaking, if one can reasonably assume that messages are supposed to be private (such as when they're titled "private messages") then under federal law, it would be illegal for admins to read them except during the course of the two exceptions I listed earlier.

If the word private is used, it is a game changer. If you are a supporting member and PAY to use the site, then its given the same protection as email.
Remember that ass that hacked into Palin's email account? He was arrested and charged. There is a digital finger print when that asshole over there does this. The any admin at a forum who accesses private messages can be arrested for what they are doing.

I think we've determined that there is, or may be, a significant amount of gray area as to whether or not it's legal to read one's private messages. What we can clearly agree on is that it's unethical and inconsiderate to do so.
Further, when it's people whom you've met, socialized with (both online and off), partied with, donated money to their causes who have compromised your privacy, you feel even more betrayed. And the betrayal becomes personal.
I think that's what most of us have the biggest problem with.

I worked for a top 50 company and it was stated over and over that they 'could and would' read our email if needed without notification. We were always told that when we sent an email out we were representing that company. Thus if you did something like send out jokes that were offensive to anyone you could be fired. Maybe this was different my situation since I worked for a financial company.

I was actually wondering where the hell everyone was so I went over to digital as well. Place is dead. Others have said it but that blue is awful and the death blow is that it is really slow over there. I really liked some of the features over there though.

Remember that ass that hacked into Palin's email account? He was arrested and charged. There is a digital finger print when that asshole over there does this. The any admin at a forum who accesses private messages can be arrested for what they are doing.
:lurk: for video of Jesse being taken away in cuffs, and head slammed into cruiser... :leaving:

That works as long as CF's PM engine doesn't parse the link like Vette Barn does.

Well that didn't work at work, might have to try it when i get home
I think we've determined that there is, or may be, a significant amount of gray area as to whether or not it's legal to read one's private messages. What we can clearly agree on is that it's unethical and inconsiderate to do so.
Further, when it's people whom you've met, socialized with (both online and off), partied with, donated money to their causes who have compromised your privacy, you feel even more betrayed. And the betrayal becomes personal.
I think that's what most of us have the biggest problem with.
I would find that to be an extremely cowardly, testicle-lacking act.
Reprehensible.

Why do you think Jesse got so pissed when I sent him an Email telling him that he didn't have the stones to do what was right?

The only way it could possibly be condoned is if Member X threatened real, physical harm to Member Y. Member Y should then turn it over to legal authorities and let them do with it as they will.
Beyond that, reading PMs between members merely to satisfy one's personal curiosity or just to derive pleasure would be a big mistake.. .
I don't believe their is much gray area here; private messages are considered to be private and the user would have a reasonable expectation that the message would remain private.
If a husband can get arrested and charged for reading his wile's emails I am certain a mod could be charged.
You took the high road it seems to me.

You took the high road it seems to me.
One of the first things that I was told when I was made an Admin here was that we DO NOT read other people's private messages. Gave me a lot of respect for the guys running the show.
Do I have the ability to do so? Absolutely. Do I have the desire? Absolutely not. IF (and it's a big "IF") there were dire circumstances (e.g. someone is in danger of physical harm, major criminal activity, etc.), then yes, I would, after consulting and being given permission, look into private messages.
But the member of a car forum sending another member a link to a different car forum? Sorry...you'll have to come up with a far more compelling argument than that to get me to agree that looking in one's PM's is justified.

This question comes up from time to time.
The short answer is that nobody at Corvetteforum can access the private messages of other users. I'm told that vBulletin software can be configured to allow PMs to be monitored and some sites do so.
Our feeling historically has been that PMs are private. The folks at Internet Brands feel the same way, so the software is set to prevent monitoring of PMs.
If we were served with a court order to produce PMs, it would be possible for someone on the tech team at IB to retrieve them, but it would be time-consuming to do so.
Having said that, the rules of the site apply to PMs even though we do not monitor them. If, however, someone gets what they believe is an inappropriate PM and forwards it to a moderator, we will get involved.
I believe that's the scenario that caused this question to be posted, so it would have been better for the OP to PM a moderator with the question, as per the following:

Mike,
I can’t read your PMs….well except when someone forwards them to me. If you are going to try and recruit people at least tell them you are trying to be sneaky. I think your time here is done. Enjoy the other forum.
