View Full Version : I figured out why my cub cadet had no compression

The day before my shoulder surgery, I was trying to get the lawn mowed. I was almost done. When my cub cadet made a funny sound, blew smoke out the front and I shut it down. I just pushed it in the shed. ( my neighbor Vic has been mowing my lawn for me. Won't take gas money or gas for his tractor-- great neighbor :yesnod: Mary's been making homemade goodies for them and I've dropped off a couple cases of beer )

I finally was able to see what happened. It was kind of obvious :yesnod:

Amazing what hot gases can do in a literally a few seconds. Only the aluminum head is trashed. The block is fine, no extra bits on the valves. I purchased another head from a cub cadet friend and should have it running again this weekend :hurray:

Total cost, $35 for the head shipped and $15 for a Kohler head gasket :seasix:

What caused that to happen? :bigears:

Be a shame for it to happen again for the same reason.:(

I used a head gasket that did NOT have a solid ring around the combustion chamber. It got hot enough to compromise the bonding agent and the hot gases etched the soft aluminum. Once it started, it was done in seconds.

The block is cast iron, the valves are stellite so no other damage was done. :seasix:

Never seen one that bad, but ive seen socres of K and M Kohlers with blown head gaskets.

Check your timing and tune...almost looks like it was detonating, which was also very common in those engines, right before something broke.
