Just ordered stromboli for tonight. Local mom and pop place makes killer food. Does the rest of the world eat these or is it a midwest thing ? :cert:

I like it, but I know of no place that serves it in the Deep South where I am. Although I made it at home once, it's a chore--over 3 hours of prep time. My feeble attempt wasn't nearly as good as what I'd had in restaurants. It seems to be a staple in NYC, so I don't think it's just a Midwest thing.

If you ever worked on a farm, the noontime meal is "dinner", the big meal of the day. The evening meal is supper. Still a substancial meal but not quite as big.

Strombolis are big here here too :yesnod:

I grew up and worked on a farm, and what you say is true. Dinner was a huge meal--maybe fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed corn, black-eyed peas, butter beans, candied yams, sweet tea, rolls or corn bread, and peach cobbler for dessert. You ate between 11:00 and 12:00, and you went back in the fields an hour after you ate.

Supper was usually leftovers (if anthing was left over), just not as much of it. If nothing was left over, Momma and Grandmomma cooked something new. And they were up at daylight to bake home-made biscuits, fried ham and sausage, eggs, and grits with butter...plus lots of coffee.

On Sunday in the Summer, after church I'd grab a left-over biscuit, poke a hole in it with my finger, and fill it with molasses. That, and a left-over baked sweet potato, was my supper while I fished in the pond on my Grandad's place. I remember all of that so well....

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In that order. There is no supper.

My old man still says "supper" from the old english "to sup", but we call it dinner in my generation. Better than "strapping on the old feedbag!"

Tomato tomatto, it's all good! :yesnod: :sneaks:
