Truck Fire Closes Austin SB I-35

Updated: Monday, June 24 2013, 11:12 PM CDT

A semi-truck fire closed the southbound lanes of I-35 just south of Lady Bird Lake Monday afternoon -- possibly closing it until midnight.

The Austin Fire Department says a truck carrying pork bellies was in the 1900 block of I-35 close the Woodland Avenue exit when it burst into flames.

The cause appears to be due to a mechanical malfunction, according to AFD.

One of the truck driver's dogs died in the fire. No other injuries have been reported.

Crews are on the scene and working to clear the burned truck and debris from the roadway.

The frontage road was reopened by 2:20 p.m. Officials say the southbound interstate lanes will not reopen until midnight.

Drivers are strongly advised to seek alternate routes.
