I've had my HP 17" laptop 3 yrs now. Other than all the sht it has collected that mickey mouse anti viru programs can't seem to get out, I was thinking of doing a complete reinstall of Windows 7.

As I recall, it came with XP. When I upgraded to 7, I recall saving some things because the install should wipe it all clean?

Sound about right?

It's okay, I'll still have the little Netbook for your viewing pleasure while I fix it. Maybe I should throw on 8 for the aggravation?

Stick with DOS. And nobody needs more than 640k.

Depends on how you do it.

Ideally, you should wipe it and start fresh. You can do "fix" installs and upgrades, but if you've got something there's no guarantee it's gone.

So, save all your personal stuff, porn, and such somewhere.

Note what installed software you've got, and make sure you have it to re-install. At least the shit you want.

Download and save drivers for any devices like video cards (you can probably do this after, but if you screw it up and can't get online, will be a hassle).

512k is good.

I'm still mixed on 8. Not a fan, but it's not so bad when you get used to it.

Installing an OS these days is a piece of cake. Used to be you had to create a boot disk and worry about IRQs or something or another, and installing drivers was much more difficult. Now you just throw in the Windows disk and watch as it happens by itself.

Unless the machine has an SSD, the first time I reinstalled my HP netbook it was a nightmare getting the install order correct and working right with the intel ssd drivers and caching sw. I had to tell HP how to do it, they couldn't figure it out either.

True, the main concerns are saving your personal stuff and being able to install the software you want.

Drivers aren't so bad since window has enough to make it work, and then you can go download the real drivers for devices.
