View Full Version : Springfield XDs .45

I'm new at the concealed carry thing. I've got a S&W .40 semi auto, but it's too big for concealed carry. A friend has the Springfield XDs .45 and I got to shoot it tonight. I was pretty accurate with it. It's small for a .45 but the kic'ks not as bad as I expected. It's a very popular gun right now. Any opinions?

friend of mine has one. I've shot it several times.

It's nice.

A bit bigger than my M&P Shield .40, but not by much. Bit heavier too.

:iagree:

How do you like the .40 Shield? I didn't like the ergonomics. I have a hard time with grips that are flat. My Berettas are shaped for your hand. But it makes them a little bigger (not as flat).

The .45 XDs is a better gun than the PX4 in terms of build quality. Wish I had one.

Love. It. Shoots great. Good quality. No regrets at all.

:seasix:

My only issue with it is that I use it as a pocket gun and it is kind of heavy for that format. It is fine in my work attire (suit pants, dockers, jeans etc) but it is way too heavy for shorts. I've also got a Ruger LCP that works better for the way I want to carry it. It's so small and light that I forget I have it.

It's a little thin, but I don't have large hands, so it works ok for me. I can shoot it plenty well for personal defense. I pocket carry, so I wanted something as flat as possible.

If I'm shooting for accuracy I use one of my Glocks.

I shot my .40 and the.45 side by side. My full size .40 was more comfortable to shoot, but it's too big to carry. The .45 is smaller and thinner, and didn't feel as nice shooting, but the trigger pull makes it easier to be accurate. It's got a grip and trigger safety like a traditional 1911, which I like. Nice gun and real popular. Anyone want to suggest something similar to look at?

I'm a bit biased but if you want a small 45, there is no other gun to compare it to.

Biased, but I would recommend shooting an M&P Shield for comparison.

I really like both, though. :yesnod:

I love my Kimber Ultra Carry.

I went shopping with a very open mind, and I loved it the first time I held one.

10mm ammo is MUCH more available right now than .45, but that may not be a permanent situation.

I'm not a gun guy, but for CCW purposes how many bullets will that XD .45 hold?

Stopping power is good and all but i personally would opt for a .40 or 9mm with a higher capacity with some good ammo.

I thought about that, it is a single stack, 5 plus 1. But still, I'm not expecting to be in a gun battle, if I can't defend myself in public with more than a couple of .45 hydros, I've done got myself somewhere that I deserve to be killed...

$900. is cheap for a Kimber. They are a quality, reliable gun. I have several but my Kimber Crimson Ultra Carry II is my favorite to shoot and carry.

I try to support my local gun shop whenever possible. They know me, my guns and have done some tuneups for free and on occasion will hand me a new product and say, "give this a try let us know what you think of it".

Its good to develop a relationship with your local gun shop/ gunsmith.

no.

In the summer, I carry a bodyguard 380 more often than the Ultra Carry.
Wife doesn't like mine, so I have been kicking around the idea of a full size as a nightstand gun.

I hear ya, but I just paid $30 for a $20 box of 50, I'd rather not do that in the future. They'll make plenty on range fees and the Springfield I'm probably about to buy, and the Kimber I'll probably eventually buy, thanks to you...I'll spend more at their range if I can get the ammo cheap.

I have a XDs.45 and positively love it. I carry it in a ISWBH and it just about disappears. Plenty accurate.

Considering its size the kick is not bad at all even with +p which it is rated for. It’s actually much easier to shoot than my Bodyguard.380, Walther PPK.380 and my Model 60 S&W .38 I have fired it with all sorts of ammo including lead hand loads and it just keeps on going BANG,BANG,BANG!

I carried a full size 1911 .45 for decades and its now just about retired and living a life of luxury in my safe.

I’m basically old fashioned in regards to guns (normally do not like plastic stuff), holsters (leather only) but that little XDs has sure wormed its way into my heart.

I'm too fat to put anything else in the WB. LoL. I have a pocket holster for it. Works great as long as the pants aren't too loose.

I've put about 1000 rounds through mine with all kinds of ammo. No issues at all. I trust it with my life.

The LCP pretty obviously doesn't have the stopping power of the Kimber but I can carry it in ANY clothing. Unlike you old fuggers, I still move around from time to time. I wear basketball shorts and t-shirts quite often. No way I could carry a bigger pistol comfortably. Same for dress clothes... the LCP is much more comfortable and concealable.

If I could ever lay my hands on one to see how it fits me I mght buy a pair of XDs's.

The only small 45 I have now is a Springfield ultra-compact (3.5" bbl). Works better than great, just too heavy for quick draw. Not that it can't be done, just can't practice without damaging tendons at my age.

My carry is a Kimber Pro in a Milt Sparks VM2 IWB holster.

Love the idea of one of the Ultra Carry pistols, but I'm wanting specifically something smaller and lighter, so that has me leaning towards the Shield in 9mm or perhaps the XDs. For use while hiking, camping, and biking, smaller and lighter would be easier I'd think (at least for me).

Kimber goes along on the hikes in the backpack for use around the campground and tent, but the 9mm will be accessible easily while moving.

On days when I want something lighter, I go with a Ruger LCP. It is so easy to carry that you have no excuse for being unarmed.

I've complained about my experience with my XD 40 sub compact a few times on here. Well this weekend up at the ranch i decided to let my father in law fire it. It Failed to Load twice every magazine he fired. I picked it up ran a quick mag through it no problems, slow fired it and it the slide locked back on me once as well.

I will be calling Springfield again this week to see what they can do for me. It appears as though the bullets are coming in contact with the slide lock inside the gun. They've already replaced the magazine under warranty since it only happens with the extended mag, not sure how they'll handle this one, but they've been great every other time I've contacted them.

My son has a Milt Sparks for his Colt 1991a1 compact. The quality of the holster is unsurpassed. I carried it for a couple weeks and enjoyed the holster except his Colt has a knurled grip like my Kimber. Since I seldom wear T-shirts, the grip would grind into my side.

I wish Sparks would make a higher holster that would cover the grip on the skin side.

I spoke with Sparks company late last year and they would custom make it fo me ($200.00 with shipping) but they are 4 months out on orders now

.When you FIL fired it when it would not load did you have a stove-pipe type jam? You also said it fired fine for you when you shot a "Quick Mag"

Is it possible at those times you were limp wristing the piece. These guns are notorious for needing a very good solid grip to allow the action to work right.

Working as a range officer at my club I have seen what the differences in grip and wrist strength can do. Most times a limp wrist will produce stove pipes but not all times. Sometimes you just get your basic feed problems.

My XDs.45 seems to take everything I run threw it with no problem. I have even loaded mags as a test with different weight bullets, different power level and with both lead and jacketed slugs.

I have two short, and two longer mags but always carry it with the shorter mag and keep the longer for a reload.

No it's not stove piping, it's locking the slide back. Is there a possibility for user error? Only if our thumbs were riding the slide lock. He carrys an XD.45, so i don't believe it's the problem. It's never once had a problem shooting the lower capacity mag.

Last night I did find this write up which very exactly matches my problem.

Premature Slide Lock with the XD-40:Causes & Possible Cure (http://www.xd-hs2000.com/longsliderelease.html)

After reading the article I took my gun apart and loaded a magazine with bullets into the gun and manually ejected the bullets from the mag. You could very clearly see the bullets coming in contact with the slide lock internally. What's weird is it only does it with the extended mag, and since this is a brand new mag it's done this on, it's not the mag itself.

Thanks for the link!

It could be the mag even though new. That why you always try them out a few times before trusting. I have seen guns shipped with defective mags, same goes for new purchased ones. <and its hard to tell by just a good looksee> SHIT HAPPENS. If my gun I would get another X mag and give it a serious try out.

Good luck, Dave
