Kobe Bryant's Motion to Dismiss Lawsuit over Memorabilia Denied by Judge

Posted on June 2, 2013

Next Kobe Bryant's motion to dismiss a lawsuit concerning the potential sale of his basketball memorabilia by his mother has been denied by a federal judge, according to the Courier-Post.

The report notes that the motion has not only been denied, but the trial will also take place in Camden County, New Jersey (Bryant was hoping to move the trial to California).

A lawsuit has been filed against Bryant by Goldin Auctions of West Berlin in an attempt to keep him from interfering with the possible sale of approximately 100 items ranging from his high school days in Philadelphia to his early years with the Los Angeles Lakers. His mother, Pamela, claims the items belong to her.

Bryant tweeted in early May:

It's certainly an ugly state of affairs. When you are in a legal battle with your own mother, that's when you know relations have soured.

This, of course, isn't exactly a new trend. We've seen battles over money or assets between athletes and family members throughout the years. When money is involved, anything goes.

Bryant just finished up his 17th season with the Lakers. The 34-year-old star suffered a torn Achilles' tendon just before the playoffs this season, watching his club eventually fall in the first round to the San Antonio Spurs.

There has been some speculation that Bryant will retire this summer after the injury, but he has said that is not the case.

One, or both of them is a self-important, ungrateful ass.

And all this time I thought he was doing a pretty decent job of keeping his nose clean after the sexual assault scandal of 2003 and shit.

"...honor your father and mother...."

sounds like a spoiled kid to me. instead of fighting her, he should be taking care of her.

He isn't going after money. He wants his stuff. It is his mother that wants the money. From what I saw it is everything from his old uniforms, trophies, etc. She is even trying to sell some of his championship rings. Even as an uber millionaire, I could see why he might want to hold on to that stuff... especially things like the rings.

I am not one to jump in and defend an athlete, but in this case I agree with him completely.

For crap's sake, let Mom make a couple thousand of the items and call it a day. Like he needs it, what an ass.

Sell it. She took a $450k advance from an auction company and bought a house.

Sounds like a greedy b*itch of a mother to me. It takes a pretty pathetic person to sell off their child's posessions to buy a gazillion dollar house.

Kobe's remarks: The items hold "tremendous sentimental value for me, and I desire to hand down my well-earned memorabilia to my children."

I don't see how that is at all indicitive of a spoiled kid.

It is not a "couple thousand". She took a $450k ADVANCE. The items are expected to draw... well... a lot more than that.

OK, I'm wrong, more than a couple thousand. Not shedding a tear for either, way out of my league.

This.

She feels she's owed something she didn't earn. I wonder who she voted for...
