Parents must have been pissed with him at the beginning to name him that. But, he shot and killed himself. I remember hearing his name a lot. But, can't picture him. Guess I'll have to google it with safe search ON.

Sheriff: Ex NASCAR driver Dick Trickle dies of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at 71 - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/sheriff-ex-nascar-driver-dick-trickle-dies-of-apparent-self-inflicted-gunshot-wound-at-71/2013/05/16/34357c84-be70-11e2-b537-ab47f0325f7c_story.html)

CONCORD, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina say former NASCAR driver Dick Trickle has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 71.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says authorities received a call believed to be from Trickle on Thursday saying that “there would be a dead body and it would be his.” Authorities tried to call the number back, but no one answered.

The sheriff says Trickle’s body was found near his pickup truck at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City, N.C., about 40 miles northwest of Charlotte. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Tim Johnson says foul play is not suspected.

Trickle was the Winston Cup series rookie of the year in 1989 but never won a Cup race. He won two Busch Series races.

Damn.
Used to keep track of Dick's performance every week on my dorm room door. The only driver I know that would lite up a cigarette in-car, during cautions.

:sadangel:
:iagree:

He was once asked if it was true that he had won more races than any other driver in NASCAR. His response was something like, "I don't know about that, but I know I've lost more races than any other driver"

:sadangel: RIP Dick.

I remember hearing his name a lot. But, can't picture him. Guess I'll have to google it with safe search ON.

You heard his name a lot because, well, it was Dick Trickle. :funny:

During races ESPN commentators Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann also enjoyed making light of the alliteration in his name and would always take notice of Trickle's finish, regardless of his placement, according to WCNC-TV.

I read several interviews, he seemed like a totally cool guy. Damn...that sucks.

He was a really down to earth guy.

Bodine said that a few years ago he had to back out of a celebrity cruise for patients who were on kidney dialysis. He asked Trickle to fill in.

'He made such an impression on people on that ship that everyone wanted to know when Dick was coming back,' Bodine said. 'They loved him. They tell me he was the last man to leave most of the bars on the ship and I believe it.'

The only driver I know that would lite up a cigarette in-car, during cautions.

:yesnod:

During his racing career, he attracted attention when he drilled a hole in his safety helmet to allow him to smoke a cigarette as he competed.

He also installed cigarette lighters in his cars so he could smoke during races, the local news station noted.

Trickle recalled in an interview with Fox Sports two years ago of a fan who came up to him while signing autographs and asked him about the cigarettes.

'He says, 'how many cigarettes did you smoke during that race?' And I said, "how many yellows were there?" I said, "one for every yellow."

Dick was the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character in Days of Thunder.

'People everywhere knew his name,' Bodine said. 'That’s why they used his likeness in that movie Days of Thunder. He was such a character.'

The main character in that popular niche racing movie, played by Tom Cruise, was named Cole Trickle.

Hmmm...wonder if he had family members in the cemetery or just thought it to be the appropriate place.

Actually it was Tim Richmond.. :yesnod:

Dick was a true Racer, and kicked ass back in his Short Track Late Models, and ASA racing days.

He was a down to earth guy that anyone could talk to.

He lived to race, and he raced hard no matter how good his car was for the day..

He was a true Racers Racer! and will be missed by many.... :sadangel:

Not sure why he chose to clock out now rather than wait, but I can only guess he had some health issues and chose to end things faster than Gods plan.

This was a man who feared nothing.

I just remember the personalities from back then so knew when the movie came out...

Been thinking of starting a Tim Richmond thread for awhile, most don't remember him, but he was one hell of a racer in his day. :yesnod:

I remember Tim Richmond. He was a dam good driver and I believe if hadn't got sick he would have won a championship in Winston Cup.

Richmond preferred hookers to clean women, and he consequently contracted aids, and died from it.

Too bad about Trickle....:sadangel:
