Last "big robot" movie I saw was Robot Jox.
Yes, that steaming pile of crap.
So I'm not quite as optimistic as you are sir on PR being a good flick.
Though I'd have no problem being wrong. :cert:
I don't understand why some people insist on holding up Robot Jox as an indicator of what Pacific Rim could be. The comparisons can't go any further than both films feature people driving enormous robots.
I believe that Guillermo Del Toro's skills as a writer/director, his passion for Japanese kaiju films, and the fact that he tells stories about people and doesn't just throw SFX on the screen, assures that Pacific Rim will end up being a much better film than Robot Jox.
Maybe even as good as Godzilla Vs Megalon. :D

I'd like to see a Megas XLR feature film, myself. Used to love that concept/animated series on Cartoon Network.

If we're really lucky, maybe giant robot movies will become a huge trend and we'll get Magus XLR, The Big Guy And Rusty, Voltron, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tranzor Z, Robotech, Gunbuster and Gundam.
Amazingly, uber-producer Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, The Walking Dead) is already in development on Gaiking...

All of those are really knock offs of Tetsujin 28-go, known as Gigantor in the US, so yeah... they're all related.
That is why it's called a genre.

BIG-O would be another good one..with someone like...Pierce brosnan playing Rodger Smith, and Emma Stone playing Dorothy...
The whole idea of a Big Robot film, done in Film noir...with todays technology...MMM NICE

Totally.
That is why there is room for all these projects. Each of them can bring something different to the table.
Magus and Big Guy/Rusty would be comedies.
Gunbuster could be the Twilight/Hunger Games of the genre, with it's female leads and romantic focus.
Neon Genesis Evangelion could be the most serious psychological scifi, akin to Event Horizon, or 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The important thing about any of these projects is putting the human element above the special effects and spectacle. If filmmakers can do that, there's no reason a giant robot/giant monster movie can't be a great movie.

Apex, any info on why there are two people in the robots at once?
All I know at this point is that each of the two pilots are essentially acting as one hemisphere of the brain of the Jeager. They are connected by a "neural bridge", so they are one entity, but each bring something to the table.
Why this is necessary for the driving of the Jeagers isn't yet clear.
Why this was written into the film is easy to see. It creates a few different possible plot points.
What happens when one pilot is incapacitated?
How are pilots paired?
What if the pilots love or hate each other?
I'll admit that the twin-pilot element kinda bothered me at first, until I saw the trailers. Once I could see how it works, I was sold.
