The StingRay bike thread got me thinking. What were your favorite childhood toys from back in the day?

Post pics, even if they didn't make your wish list for birthdays, Christmas, Hanukah, etc...

One of my favs was Johnny Speed Jaguar by Topper Toys (1966). It was dope, "remote" controlled and battery-operated via a big, honkin' 6 volt lantern battery for extended life. And, at 22" long and 9" wide, it needed it!

Very cool looking! All in Carmen Red and with its seductively curvaceous lines it looked like a '63 Corvette StingRay Coupe. It ran forward, backward, left or right and accessories could be purchased. Absolutely badass!!!

Another one I cherished nearly two decades was Mattel's Vertibird Rescue Helicopter (1971 - early 1980s).

The helicopter is attached to 21" rod which goes in a central spinning hub, and takes 4 "D" cell batteries.

You use the controller to fly the copter around in a circle and make it swoop down to retrieve items or figures with the hook beneath the helicopter.

Mattel made several versions, mostly with a rescue theme. I had the "Artic Adventure" set, with the hidden hangar. I would play with that joker for hours. Would still have it to this day if the PTO shaft hadn't broken. Mattel stopped offering tech support, so there were no replacement parts available.

Early years was Matchbox cars. I liked them even better than Hot Wheels. You would go into the store, spin the display, and tell the clerk the number of the one you wanted. She would open the display and hand you a cool blue/yellow matchbox container with the car inside. I started collecting them again a few yrs. ago. Price range $30 up with box :leaving:

I tried train sets...too slow and kept falling off the track. I kept trying to run them to fast, I guess.

Got a slot car track. I played the crap out of it.

Tonka Toys - my dad had a landscaping biz. I had Tonka dump trucks, loaders, tractors, etc...I think I kept the back of his truck full with my Tonka toys. There was always huge piles of dirt, sand, etc...at the job sites to play in.

Model kits - every Fri. after school, dad would pick me up and our first stop was a supermarket with a huge model section. I would build it over the w/e. I learned a lot about history from reading the first page of the instructions.

Evil Knievel motorcycle wind up. I had the truck and motorcycle. Played the crap out of it, too.

I always love my Gunsmoke holster and guns, just a little trivia:"For many years all the TV shows and movie studios in Hollywood got their guns from "Stembridge Gun Rentals" They were around since the 1920`s and furnished props on many movies and tv shows. They went out of business in the late 1990`s and their inventory of guns was sold in a special auction. The gun Matt Dillon used in "Gun Smoke" was among those sold along with guns used by Dan Blocker as "Hoss" on "Bonanza" and "Little Joe"`s gun as well. And many others. They are all in the hands of private collectors now. The last i heard Little Joes`s and Hoss`s guns are on display at the "Buffalo Bill Museum" in Wyoming.
For the record Dillon packed a Colt single action model 1873 71/2 inch barrel in 45 caliber. It was an actual antique made in 1895, not a modern day copy. When it sold at auction along with the gun and holster were papers from Stembridge stateing it was the gun used in the series along with an afadavit from James Arness himself. It sold for $15,000.00."

Those Star Trek phasers (early 70's) that shot those plastic discs were fun as feck to play with, too. We would take an X-acto Knife, carefully cut the glue seams holding them together, then mod the rubber band firing assembly with a thicker, sturdier one for increased "lethality" or so it seemed to all hostile alien life forms we encountered.

There was a high capacity rifle, too, with a longer barrel for improved accuracy.

My cousin had Mattel's Super Star Stunt Sky Show Plane, too. A battery-powered, free-flying marvel that worked by inserting a disc into it's fuselage that operated the plane's rudder and elevator for aerobatic manuevers like the loop-the-loop and Immelmans.

It was rugged, forgiving and just awesome to watch in flight!

Chargers are awesome. Sure, three runs through one and any racin' stripes or numbers, or flames were wiped off the side of your car, and those flash chrome rims were black, but if you put three or four of them in series before a jump, you could get a Hot Wheels to jump over a full size pickup truck with a bedcap on it.

To this day, the only toy that terrified the ever-lovin' stool outta' me is the Alien Blaster Target Set Game (1979) by Parker Brothers I think.

This is a huge, heavy, cardboard target game that you shoot with a ping pong ball gun. Its black, knobby, hinged, bio-mechanical claws are worth 50 points and if you pop the alien in its chest, an eerie bell sounds and you cop 100 points.

This game must've been demonically possessed from the get-go, because I was afraid to even look at it on Christmas day when my older brother got it in 1979, but I couldn't stop playing it.

The panel artwork is absolutely mesmerizing. I would go to bed nightly for months afterward only to wake with fright from visions of dripping, slime-lubricated jaws ripping through my flesh like the doomed crew of the Nostromo (save Ripley and Jones the cat).

I think it's in the attic of my parents house, what remains of it anyway. The gun fell into disrepair and got tossed. I think the board and instructions are still intact. Maybe someday I'll summon the courage to go up there and investigate....

Yup. I had the Cox Super Sport Trainer. Got it for my 13th birthday. Line controlled, loud, and would make you dizzier'n a mofo, from going around in circles, but fun as all get out!

I took my little brother's toy Evel Knievel helmeted, decapitated head (another post) and glued it in the cockpit for added realism.

R? No. Plenty of PG-13 offerings, though. I think Parker Bros. was focused on capitalizing on the success of the movie and the synergy from Star Wars which was released two years earlier.

We used to mod the feck outta' those Stomper 4x4 toys by Schaper (1980) and pull them in mechanical shop class when I was in high school. These toys were battery-powered vehicles with working headlights that ran on a single AA battery and featured full-time, four-wheel drive. They were driven by a single motor that turned both axles.

holy shit, I had "Sweet Cindy" too, it kicked ass, my dad flew it while I watched for a year or 2...then one day, it ran out of gas too high and nosedived hard....broke to pieces.

My dad felt bad so he went out and dropped some serious coin on a larger model with a huge ass remote control, had about a 4 foot antenna, big control box, about 8X8", all kinds of levers and buttons.

He put it together, put the starter box to it and it fired off..went up...and came down hard, actually burned for a few moments....as I recall it was quite large, but I was not very old, Id say it was 36" across.

Dad got me a string controlled airplane that looked like a Cessna for Christmas one year.

Dad decided he needed to teach me first also,

it went up,

and up some more,

and then he corrected it

it went nose first

Reminds me of one christmas, I got a kickass huge train set. I was so excited...my dad and my great uncle set it up, took all day...I wanted to play with it so bad.

My dad turned it on, everything seemed to be going great, then something happened, as I recall my great uncle had the idea of attaching the rails to the board with staples, something shorted out, there was smoke....and everything went dead...

I earned my way through college working 3 summers at the Tonka Toy factory in Mound, MN. Summertime was when Tonka made their Christmas toys, so they'd hire a lot of college kids to work the assembly lines, therfore, I could claim that I was one of "Santa's helpers". Wish I had some of the Mighty Tonkas that I built.

Tonka stuff I played the crap out of. Funny, I thought they were made and imported from Japan (by name, I guess)but, label says MN.

Had several of those! I liked the waterproof 4x4 pickups. We'd try to regear them to make em faster or climb more stuff. They worked in the pool too! I REALLY wish they'd release them again!

Other toys:
Models (of course) - I had a USS Constitution model. My sister knocked it off the stand and broke the masts! Old Ironsides was never the same, so we put it in the pool with some ballast (and a few cherry bombs), lit it up on fire and set her adrift. I was helping clean melted plastic and copper coloring from that pool the rest of the day and most of the next.

My neighbor had fullsize GI Joes. And LOTS of accessories (guns, tents, Jeeps, etc), so we spent many days stamping out the enemies.

Green Machine
http://trus.imageg.net/graphics/media/trus/Aplusplus/2012/12835620/huffy-16-inch-green-machine-junior-12835620-01.jpg

I had a few AFX racers that we would also regear or try to find better magnets to make em faster.

Loved my Tonka Trucks. GI Joe used them frequently too to haul crap.

My dad gave me his 50's era Erector set and we'd build all kinds of bridges, cranes, etc. I also had his 40's vintage Lionel train. I still have that one. :)

For Christmas one year, I got one of these:

Big Bertha Deluxe Reading Corp 1965.wmv - YouTube

Ya'll recall the "Big Bertha" Toy tank made by Deluxe Reading Corporation in 1965 and shit?

Huge frikkin' toy! A 1/ 8 scale Sherman Tank!

It had a spring-operated cannon on one side that shot balls and had an adapter so you could shoot missles. On the other end was a double-barrel, crank-operated, machine gun that shot plastic BB's. The tracks were molded on and it had plastic wheels underneath.

My older brother had one and we played the ever-lovin' stool out of it. It was so rugged, we actually SAT on it while riding it. Indcredible toy! We built entire citites out of building blocks then pulverized 'em to the ground with Bertha's main cannon.

Educational/recreational toys like the Show N' Tell Record Player/Slide Show (and shit) from General Electric 1964-1970s.

Very cool record player with a "TV" screen to view slide movies. The record player plays 45 or 33 rpm records. Also played slides from Picturesound Program sets which were records and slides telling various children's stories.

While the record was playing, the slide would move up to the next scene. Many different Picturesound sets were made: i.e. Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, History, Science, Religion, Disney, later Sesame Street, etc.

I liked to read and do crafts. The best gift I remember was my dad getting me my own blowtorch. Loved that thing....and I never burned down the house.:D

(I was @ 10 years old)

Yep, they did. Mine made it exactly 1 flight before lawn darting into the street at Mach 2. :)

Then my dad let me try.

Um, dad, parts don't fly. I kinda need that engine over in the neighbor's yard. LOL

So far..

Dad's have killed all of our string fly planes.. :sadangel:

I wonder if anyone here ever got to crash one themself? :island14:

Divco milk truck. Used to make dirt roads in the back yard and play with that hours on end.

What year was that ? I swear, I remember they had one on display in our local Sears store in the front window. You COULDN'T help but see it when driving by. I think they had freakin' spotlights on the thing or I had that deer in the eye look. Man, I lusted hard for that car, too. I never saw it up close. Just in that window and I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Sometime in the early 70's. That Jag was definitely the holy grail of toydom. It had a rediculously high price tag, too. No kid I knew ever got one.

For gun toys, nothing we ever got could top (or stop) my cousin's Johnny Seven 7 O.M.A. - One Man Army Gun - (Topper Toys 1964)

He lived about 10 miles from us, but we begged him to bring it with him every time he came to visit. We would pretend to be soldiers in the Vietnam War in the woods behind my parent's house and all the kids wanted him in their platoon or squad as "point man" for obvious reasons.

The best selling boy's toy of 1964! Seven guns in one, which included: Grenade Launcher, Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher, Anti Bunker Missile Launcher, Armor Piercing Shell, Rifle fires 10 Bullets, Slide Bolt Action Machine Gun, Detachable Cap Pistol which fires shells. Detachable Stock & built in Bi-Pod. Over 3 feet long!

My Dad never killed any of my string planes, I crashed them all by myself. Including my first R/C model trainer, a Cox Piper Turbo Arrow III. Fortunately, it was foam and easy to re-glue and commit to the skies again.

Speaking of "glue" I ordered a Cox Star Cruiser Gas-powered Free-flight UFO from Johnson Smith Co. one summer when I was 13 or so. Remember those ghetto assed ads on the back of your comic books and shit?

It took me more than two months to scrape up the money mowing yards to get it, plus I had to wait and agonizingly long four weeks or so for shipping.

Well, when I finally got it, it had a fuel tank leak. I never was able to keep fuel in it long enough to start the engine. I tried putting a dab of model (and other glue) over the hole, but the corrosive nature of the fuel dissolved the glue.

Plus, it was awkward as hell to connect the glow plug to its .049 engine or tweak its needle valve due to its central location in the fuselage. So, it never flew. I don't know why I never returned it. Guess I didn't want to bother with the shipping hassle. Besides, it flew just fine in my fertile imagination...

Of course, our toys weren't all elaborate, big or expensive. A dime store variety water pistol on a hot summer's day easily provided hours of adventure.

And on the last day of school, the bus drivers even allowed us to have water gun fights on the bus provided we did not shoot them.

It was a treaty we were all too happy to oblige....

I'm thinking the most remembered toy I ever had was a BB gun that took me all summer of mowing lawns, painting mail boxes (great hustle for a $1 back then) and collecting pop bottles along side the road @ 2 cents each.

It was about $18...

A neighbor kid went with me the same day to get one with me also, but his Mom just gave him the money.. WTF! I worked all summer for mine..

For some reason I always knew mine meant more to me than his did to him.. :yesnod:

I never bought any.... but bet BUDXX would have back in the day..

I have maybe 3-4 of them in the closet not 20' away.....

10 1/2 Erection sets....

left over from my Lionel train daze, which got started in the mid 70's because I spotted an addy one sunday AM, and so started a hobby that lasted maybe ten years there, my kids and I built a layout in a single bay of my garage....~22' long 11' wide necked down to 8' wide for the control panel/transformers.....5 trains at once.....screaming, .....

sold it all off maybe 20 years ago....preparing to move south....

today, that collection would be worth nothing....

I was walking through Toys R Us the other day, and just kept thinking, "Man, I can wait until he gets just a little older, and I get to play with all these awesome toys."

So I'm not the only dad who thinks that. I feel better. :funnier: :funnier:

You know, a good dad would have a certain proficiency with these toys before their children are old enough... it means less breakage and it just makes it easier to teach the children, our future. :D

Rock'em, Sock'em Robots. One of the all-time favorites from the 1960s and '70s.

Marx first introduced this set in 1966. It came in a large display box with a boxing ring scene insert and score cards. Ring measures approx. 15" square. "Red Rocker" & "Blue Bomber" were the two robots names.

Later, in the 1970s, Marx re-introduced the robots. They were the same ring and robots but in a smaller box. You had to put this set together yourself.

Action Jackon was "Mr. Joe Kickass" too! Jackson was an 8" jointed action figure made by Mego and distributed from 1971-1974. He was basically the first widely distributed Mego action figure.

Basically, the idea was you buy an AJ action figure, then buy different outfits to change him into. Sound familiar? You bet! Just like Barbie - but for boys!

Remember that catchy jingle and shit? "Action Jackson is his name! Bold adventure is his game!"

Stretch Armstrong was another cool toy. That mofo could definitely take a licking and keep on ticking. Once his skin was breeched, though, that was pretty much his noble end. And did anyone ever figure out what the red powdery substance was he was packed with?

We used to pretend it was some freaky, coagulated, powdery blood like out of those corpses in that sci fi movie "The Andromeda Strain" and shit...

According to Wiki...

Stretch Armstrong is made of latex rubber filled with gelled corn syrup, which allows it to retain shape for a short time before shrinking to its original shape.[2] The later 1990s figures had small beads inside them.[Citation Needed]
