View Full Version : Anybody know anything about curtains?

My fiancee and I just got a new place and the master bedroom is upstairs with a sliding glass door facing west. It gets hot as hell in there with the sun shining in during the afternoon (the thermostat is downstairs and in the coolest part of the house).

Any experience with some good thermal curtains? Is thicker always better or does material play a bigger role?

Obviously the heavier the curtain the more heat they block, along with the light, but why not look into getting a reflective finish applied to the windows. That will block a ton of heat, and still let the light and the scenery through. Not that expensive either.

They make it harder for peeping toms to see you walk around in the buff. :seasix:

I guess putting tin foil in the windows would be considered a little low brow, huh?

Kerrmudgeon mentioned a reflective coating on the window. This will work, but if you have insulated windows, make sure the film is designed for that; otherwise, the heat build-up can blow out your windows. If that much heat is coming through the window, a 90% blocker will almost certainly blow out the windows.

I used sheets of some wonder material that's designed for attics; it's aluminum on one side, white on the other side. Completely cover the window opening with the white side facing out; from the street it looks perfectly appropriate.

Did you get it from a place named ACME owned by a guy named Wile E. Coyote?

The windows have something on them now, just regular tint I assume, but not sure. There is condensation between the panes, would the tint cause that or just old windows?

Privacy is a concern too, don't want the neighbors watching our silhouettes while we're having a roll in the hay.:hump:

Condensation between insulated glass means the seal has been lost. There is supposed to be a vacuum between the 2 pieces of glass. Seal loss could be the type of film that was used or just old windows. I'd still go with a sheet of radiant barrier insulation to block all the heat (and the light).

It's called radiant Barrier insulation. Supposedly in wide use in Florida.

IF you own the joint, I would replace both glass sections using Lo E thermal glass.....my house faces directly west also, have a large L/R window, and the old thing let the house heat up like MAD on a summer afternoon, I replaced that antiquated front window and it must have dropped the temps by over 20f in the L/Room.....and that was without shade, which we have for privacy.....since then we have a deck and vine growing, and so the sun it almost totally blocked....

maybe put a white trellis type construction somewhere???

Yup. I thought I was being thoughtful by not leaving the room after sex. And it was just a quick wipe, I don't see what the big deal was.

All the windows in the place will need replacing eventually. Half won't open at all and the ones that will the plastic/rubber seals have dried up and cracked. But it will be awhile before the funds allow for that much work. Might can scrounge up the dough for that window though. It will be unbearable in the bedroom come July and August without running the piss out of the AC otherwise.

OP, how big is the window in question? I have some Radiant Barrier insulation left over that I'll give to you if you pay shipping. Bear in mind that you will need a window treatment (curtains, blinds, or whatever) to hide the insulation. Put the white side to the outside of the house, and it'll look like curtains from the street. However, that leaves you with silver to the inside that must be covered up.

You just cut the insulation with scissors or a box cutter and used thumb tacts to mount it to your window jambs. Each sheet of insulation is 4' wide. After it's installed, there will be no heat coming from the window. (No light, either.)

BTW, shipping won't be much because the insulation isn't heavy, but the box will be 4' long.

Sounds similar to my place, some time ago, I had all the single pane aluminum windows and single pane kitchen slider door, on the ease side of the house....

Being in the home remodeling trades, I had a customer that wanted TWO sliders torn out, so doors/tracks came here, he put in french doors....

SO I got his thermal slider, and my neighbor got the other door pair.....

First window up for replaced, ordered to size from Home Despot....all white vinyl.....thermal, lo E at the time it was 300 bux with one single hung on each side, and a center section it's a little larger than 6' wide and 4' high....
sounds like your slider is not any more complicated than mine....really, get one that is LO E and double pane....

the rest of my windows were off the shelf at HD, and so were done for an average of 100 bux each....standard fees here for window changeout run about 50 bux/window......now keep in mind, my windows were done about 6-8 years ago.....but killing off the leaky/tired old windows, cut the HVAC bill a goodly bit.....I spent maybe 2 hours each window to install them....TOTAL for my house for all the windows was a grand, even.....plus caulking..
mine are all single hung windows, no sliders, except in the room addition, which preceded the rest of the renovations....
