The ice maker on my fancy-smancy Sub-Zero died last week. It's been iffy for the last few years by taking ice production vacations, but eventually coming back to life. This time I think it's a goner, so please say a few choice cuss words in your elegy.

I brought out the old plastic ice cube trays, which I must say are pretty efficient and tasty. Although it's the same water supply, the cubes taste cleaner and purer. Plus, they don't pack together like those semi-circles from the ice maker, allowing room for more alcohol in a drink. :shots:

What's your estimate on the cost to repair the Sub-Zero, assuming a worst-case scenario?

Go to Ebay, get a new one and put it in. It ain't rocket surgery.

I think you're just a few years behind Mrvette as far as having all your stuff break down and fall apart. I'm getting there myself.:leaving:

Have your tractor mechanic take a look at it. :seasix:

My advice: just hop on your tractor, drive into town and pick up a couple bags of ice from the local stop-n-rob.

Wasn't he going to install some kind of gas appliance in his mother's house? If he did and she's still alive, I say go for it.

You must not have seen the pics of my blood I've posted over the years. I can do a lot of repairs..but at a price of a few pints of blood.

Probably about what I paid for my Fridgidaire refrigerator. Oh, and I just checked....ice maker working fine.

Sheesh...... 1%er problems.

That was a gas dryer at my daughter's house. I'm still alive, and so is my daughter...although the explosion after I left killed a few people on the block. Thank goodness my daughter was in school. That's what's important....

Well, I don't have a forty eleven thousand dollar fridge, but it's not a big deal. Should have a wiring harness from the freezer part that plugs right in, no more than a few bolts. I can't imagine it would be that difficult. I had to replace the icemaker in my fridge a few years ago. Took about 1/2 hour.

Use the diesel engine from your mower to run the ice maker.

If you were Mr. Vette you would of fixed it with a shoelace and chewing gum and would now be listening to your overpriced Macintosh system after fixing your overpriced refrigerator.

Depends on what's wrong with it. Sometimes it's either the sensor that monitors whether the bin is full, or the solenoid that fills the tray. It could also be the motor that ejects the cubes. Last time I had mine repaired I think they replacesd the whole unit and as I recall it was about $300 which was about half parts and half labor, but it was covered by an extended warranty.

My stainless, counter-depth "Professional" series Frigidaire died and was deemed non-repairable by Frigidaire's service vendor. After three years.

I'll spare everyone the rest of the story but, suffice it to say, Frigidaire products are scorched Earth banned from all households in my family.

That's the problem with all refrigerators nowadays: Cheap, Chinese-made compressors. Even if you replaced the compressor, it's likely to fail again in a few years.

Some folks are relying soley on the used market to buy a refrigerator. If they can find a 15-year-old unit in good shape, it'll greatly outlast a new one.

That sucks. If that happened to me, I'd be pretty sour on them, too. My first fridge was a 1983 Amana that worked just fine, although the seals were shot, and it would have cost me more to replace them then the fridge was worth. I decided to step up to the ice and water in the door Fridgidaire. No issues so far.

The death of the fridge was bad enough but everything that transpired afterwards, and their customer service, rubbed salt in the wound. We went without a fridge for six weeks while they dicked around, and then declared it beyond salvation. I basically threatened to throw the dead fridge on their front lawn before they would even give me a credit. Doing the math on their cheap-ass credit basically implied their $2K fridge should last five years.
