Man suspected of sleeping with corpse of dead girlfriend

WILLIAMSTON, NC (WITN/NBC) - A man is accused of concealing his girlfriend's death, and deputies say he even slept in the same bed with the corpse for several days. The woman's mother says she called authorities after realizing her daughter was dead.

Randall Johnson of Williamston, NC is charged with felony concealing a death from law enforcement.

Deputies say on Saturday they responded to a home on Ballard Road for a possible dead body. Once there deputies say it was evident that Carla Baggett had been dead for several days.

Their investigation shows the woman was last seen alive Wednesday evening and that her body had started to decompose in the bedroom. The body was sent to the Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville and while the cause of death is still pending, deputies say there's no evidence of foul play.

Deputies say the victim's mother and sister, along with the dead woman's grandson, also lived in the single-wide trailer.

Phyllis King, the woman's mother, told WITN that Johnson said her daughter had overdosed on Xanax, but was okay.

"I asked him, I said, Randy, is she okay? And he said yes, she's okay, and I said well she's been sleeping a long time," said King. "I went back in there that night, she was still sleeping. I went back in there the next morning--she was still sleeping. I said I'm going to call 911, she's got to wake up, she's been in here too long, and he said no, no, she's okay."

King says on Saturday she went inside the bedroom, and crawled over Johnson. "When I went in there I made my mind up, I'm going to crawl over there, I want my daughter awake. When I felt her she was dead." That's when King called 911.

The 44-year-old Johnson was jailed on a $100,000 secured bond. He has an April 17th court date

Q. Why is the average IQ higher in Canada than in the United States?
A. the public school system is better up there, on average. The trend is that Canadians generally do *more* in terms of the kinds of centrally-funded, centrally-controlled public services that would be political suicide (read: "socialist", after the McCarthy fashion) in the United States. So odds are Canada's public schools are better-funded and have higher standards, on average.

--Speaking of which, we can't rule out their single-payer health care system as a factor. It's not perfect, but it would seem that the *average* citizen up there gets better access to routine sorts of health care than what we do in our overcharged, overmedicated nation. Better health leads to higher IQ, all other things being equal.

--Also....and I know, I'm getting thumbed down for this one, but: the population up North is generally smaller and less diverse. Fewer dialects to work around, and less likelihood (Quebec aside, granted) that any given educational standard is going to be a political football (like insisting on a language standard for teaching children to read and write). It's not just about race or ethnicity either: you don't have as much interference from fundies about science education it seems, or as much *widespread* bad news going on from immigrants pushing for multilingual (and mediocre) education.

I know. I know, IQ does not equal education, but they are *very* closely intertwined: the better educated and more literate the parents are, the better the odds are that a child of theirs will *have* a higher than average Intelligence Quotient. And I get it that this is a probability: there are improbable children out there all the time, in both ways. Impoverished, abusive and neglectful parents can give birth to smart kids, and likewise, we can have rich families give forth imbeciles.

But generally, it's because the Canadian environment is better suited for smart children.
