I think the safety cage is pretty strong. That said, in a collision with a large car (much less a full-size pick-up) you're going to know what it feels like to be inside a football during a field-goal kick. In an accident, the entire inside of the Smart car should be airbag.

Just yesterday I had a Smart car pull right out in front of me on a 55mph road... way too close to even think about stopping the big 3500 Denali. Luckily I have pretty decent awareness and there was no traffic coming the other way so I was able to go into the other lane and miss her.

I can't even imagine what would have happened if I would have hit her driving this:

I've had a guy in a smart car pull out in front of me with a smirk'ish grin on his face. Wife had to restrain me from bumping him and pushing him around like a soccer ball down the parking lot.
