View Full Version : {Racers} Chase Cam question...

It's a long shot, but does anybody here have a Chase Cam with the OBDII cable?
Apparently they aren't making them for some reason any more. It is a simple cable... OBDII to RJ45.
Of course they apparently don't use a standard pinout... but nobody seems to know what they actually DO use. If I could actually find someone that had one and could get the pinout I could make one in no time.

Well, it DID sound like that's where you were goin'
Seems like the GoPros are hard to beat for the $.
Really clean picture quality and fairly good audio.

I have a couple of different cameras that work great... but I want the data. I picked up a 2 camera Chase Cam setup with the data module for next to nothing that I am trying out. On it's own, it has the accelerometer, tach, GPS, etc... but I would like to add the rest of the data that you can get from the car through OBDII.
If I was buying new, I would go with 1 of the newer systems but I couldn't pass this one up for the price.
This was with my old Canon FS100... the original looks great, even on the big TV. The sound is WAY better on the original as well.

Ohhh, I missed the OBD part of the equation. I guess you can pull RPMs, wheel spin data etc to match with the video to analyze the runs afterward?
A few guys I race with data-log but I'm not sure how they tie the data with the video.
Amazing how much information you can get about your driving. So much you don't "see" when you're behind the wheel.

I run the iPhone Harry's Laptimer app. I just bought a GPS chip and a ODB II wireless transmitter. My next event is late April so I'll do a review after that. The GPS chip should make my speed a lot more accurate and the ODB sensor will give me RPM,s and all the other goodies.

You can pull pretty much anything you would ever need...
RPM
Speed
Throttle/brake position
Manifold Absolute Pressure
Ignition Timing Advance
Coolant Temp
Intake Air Temp
Mass Air Flow
Fuel Level
Fuel Pressure
Barometric Pressure
Engine Load
Without OBDII, I can do speed, RPM, and it has the accelerometer to measure the g-forces.
This was a low video quality test that I did. In the original, the data is very clear and not blurred out. I don't have the tach hooked up in this and the second camera (lower right) was just sitting on the floor and obviously not where it will be.

I have talked to them many times and each time I get a new excuse as to why they don't have any.
Apparently the vendor that was making them backed out for some reason. They have been "testing" a new one for months but still nothing available.
I just don't get it. It is a simple cable. If you know the pinout, you could make it in a couple of minutes. That's what is so frustrating about it...

I actually have that exact cable sitting on my kitchen table... no bueno.
Chase Cam for some reason didn't use a "standard" pinout on theirs as compared to other RJ45 scanners. If I could find what they actually did use, I would be able to convert this one.

Hmmmmm.....
It was being discussed for a different reason, but that just might be it!! I'll need to look at it a little closer to double check. Last thing I want to do is fry the box.

Damn... wrong pinout. That is for the cable from the recorder to the data module. Thought you found me a winner.

Are you able to plot all those points on a graph and the track map?
Have you looked into a DL1? They're somewhat cheap used.

I was at an HPDE in a lower level group in that video so I could run around with a friend of mine (the yellow Z06) for a few laps... that was me being cautious, not polite.
Most of them aren't used to a car that loud with that much closing rate coming up on them and you never know what some of those mofos are going to do. :willy:
Notice the Ferrari and Porsche towards the end driving like they are in a subdivision.

It all goes into a program called DashWare. You can doo all sorts of things with the data once you have it uploaded.

I've looked at quite a few setups... the DL1 being among them. I wouldn't mind having one but even the used prices are more than I would like to spend. When I say I got the Chase Cam setup cheap... I mean CHEAP! :D

Well, close. I was briefly involved with some chase cam hook ups with GM and have some experience with them. We wanted a live wireless feed back to the track monitor. Got it to work but its been a few years back.

Yeah, saw that, you didnt even give him "the wave" when you went by. :fingertap:

I most certainly did. :toetap: I put a hand out the driver's side window.... Each and every time I went past. :)
I still make fun of him for that video... he saw me coming and drove way too deep into T2 (as you can see).

There aren't *that* many pin configurations. How long does it take to test each one?
:iagree:
As long as you know which pins have hot voltage you shouldnt cause any damage.
I think I have a extra pin out box laying around if you want to give it a try.

To test each, you would have to build the cable, install in the car, start the car, record for a second, pull the data, import it, and see if anything showed up. There is no way to tell if it is importing data other than to see what is in the file at the end. I know the OBDII pinout but I don't have the slightest clue as to what needs to go into the RJ45.
With 13 pins on the OBD2 (not counting +12v and ground) and 7 on the RJ45... that is a LOT of possible combinations, especially considering that some may be paired.

It definitely sounds like a great alternative; so long as it can be analyzed as a data set and not as an overlay on the video screen, which it says it can do.
