So, I took the extensins off the collectors that had the mufflers welded in and replaced them with non muffled extensions.

HOLY SHIT!!! Like me, it's loud and obnoxious and even worse when you get it going. Talk about an automotive orgasm!!!!!!!!!

While I was test driving it, I did manage to pull up next to two deputies and had to shut it off to hear what they were saying. They just wanted to know what size motor I had and how much HP....then gave me the thumbs up. Lucky me, right!

Loud pipes save lives.

I've got V&H Longshots on my Yamaha. Gives a good amount of rumble but not terribly loud at idle, same at cruising speed, but when blipping the throttle or accelerating hard.....yeah, they are pretty loud. I enjoy good relations with my neighbors, so I tend to idle through the neighborhood in 2nd, then let 'er rip when I get out on the highway. Speaking of, tomorrow sounds like a good day to blow the dust off....it's been a while.

Pipes that are too loud annoy a lot of people too.

Back in my early days of hotrodding (late 60s/early 70s), loud exhaust was a big game we played with cops. Some asshole cop would write you a no-fine fix-it ticket for exhaust modifications, then you would find a cool cop to sign it off. I went through this about a dozen times. I never fixed anything. My car club at the time was hooked up with some cops who would take care of things for us.

One cop actually told me Hey, you people (car clubs) are the good guys. You take pride in your cars, don't use drugs, don't drink and drive, and you are probably some of the safest drivers on the road. You're not who I'm trying to bust.

They kind of drew the line at organized street racing with police monitor radios so we could hear them coming, though. :leaving:

I run these on my HD. Loud, but not obnoxious.

I ride with my uncle fairly often. He runs Samson straight pipes on his Dyna. If you're behind him, which is pretty much all the damn time because he rides like his hair is on fire, you can't hear ANYTHING.

Believe it or not, I wear ear plugs pretty regularly. Not for the pipes, for the wind. I'm not the only one, it's kinda common.

All of this is limited to my Softail since it doesn't have a shield and never will. My Bagger is like a motorhome compared to the Softail

Like a lot of other things in life, it's finding a happy medium that's hard, because everyone has their own opinion of what is OK. The guys with straight pipes/no baffles.....yeah, that's too loud for me. I used to know a guy that took the baffles out of his Long Shots. Damn! They were insanely loud. Mine are plenty loud with the baffles, I sure wouldn't take them out.

I also don't want to go deaf because my pipes are so freakin' loud. I do want to be loud enough to be heard, because motorcycles are practically invisible to motorists, especially in Houston.

I don't know about common, but if I'm doing a longer ride, I wear ear plugs, because even with a full face helmet, the wind noise is pretty loud, even with the windscreen.

I wear those ear plugs whenever I ride ( plus at work ). I can actually hear more of what's around me with earplugs versus trying to hear over the wind noise even with a full face helmet

We don't have mandatory helmet laws in MN, so a lot of people don't wear them. I see a fair amount of people with ear plugs.

Demonstrating that you carry medical insurance is a defense for riding with no helmet, which de facto eliminated the helmet laws here in Texas. Many Texas riders don't wear them. I won't leave the driveway without all the gear.....boots, armored jacket, gloves, and full face helmet. My weak point is just wearing regular jeans. I have a small road rash scar on my knee from when I went down years ago because of that weakness. My pants looked like I had gotten in a fight with a tiger. The jacket armor got so hot sliding down the road, it melted.

Keeps road grime from collecting in your ears too. Ear infections are no fun!

Gene, i found a kit to weld up my own Zoomies for $189.00 since i don't have a mandrel to bend the pipes. Only problem is I would have to pay extra to chrome them too. Decisions decisions. Of course I would put some small baffles in them to be somewhat legal, but they'd be a hell of a lot louder and more awesom than what I have now :yesnod:

Eh, can't be no worse than Ron Fullerton's from 240 up around the bend a few years ago.....his wife had a yellow rod with nearly wide open headers....

Nope. I bought mine in Texas (and am replacing each part as I get the $$$) and Dad's is being built from scratch.
