View Full Version : [Ford Exploder Help] 2000 Exploder with 4.0 won't idle

I can't get this thing to crank or idle unless I have my foot on the gas. The guy who owns it decided to test the spark with a screw driver stuck in a plug boot and somehow arced it across the Idle Air Control Valve bolted to the plastic manifold. So, the IAC was replaced just in case by the time I got there.
I put my OBDII scanner on the truck and looked for codes with the ignition on and with the truck running. It gave me no trouble codes.
So, now I am at a loss as to what could have happened. He said this problem came on suddenly and just started 2 days ago with no warning.
What do you think it might be? I can't really find anything on the interweb that doesn't have me going on a wild scavenger hunt for the problem.

John had to change the fuel filter in my 08 exploder a few weeks ago.

Did yours have the same symptoms?

Will check that, but we got no codes showing this circuit was the issue and that link says that a code would be thrown. I'll check the voltages, though.

It cranked fine but it would idle "funny". (Yeah I'm a girl) I would be sitting at a red light and the steering wheel had a little vibration and the seat would vibrate. I ran a tank of premium gas in it but it didn't help. The mechanic changed the fuel filter and said there was something in the fuel filter so he thinks I got some bad fuel. It hasn't acted up since the fuel filter was changed.

:iagree:
the TPS on my Mom's Buick failed, and the damn car would go 30mph down the road.....at idle.

Idle Air Control Motor or Throttle position sensor
outside possibility EGR solenoid

Sounds like a possible vacumn leak as well..........no codes, people play in the engine bay.
Check the PCV hose and other around the areas messed with.
Hope it's an easy fix :)

I found the problem. When I take the hose off of the powerbooster when we do get it running it dies. If I put my thumb over the hose to seal it off, it runs fine. Also, when I pump the brakes the idle comes up. So, it's definitely the power booster.
Thanks, all.

Well, my father and I are going to replace it, but my friend has to buy the part. Actually, we'll buy it with the discounts we get for military or my dad's business (whichever is cheaper) and he can pay us back. As far as labor, you don't charge friends especially when they're having a hard time financially. Besides, this guy is the drummer for the band I'm in and goes out of his way to help me out with whatever when I need it. Plus, he's the only person in the world besides me that will admit to liking music by The Crash Test Dummies :yesnod:

Yep. We usually find the place that has the best price and go from there based on which discount we can get. We always get the military 10% off and get different discounts for my father's business. Which ever comes out cheaper in the long run is what we go with. PepBoys is always a No-Go because they only sell junk accessories and their hard parts are usually crap.

The only thing I've purchased from Peep Boyz is car care products like wax and glass cleaners. What about Ghetto/Vato Zone?
Do they discount for military, too? I know NAPA Auto Parts takes 10% off for AAA Auto Club members.

Usually, autozone is the cheapest around here and the store manager where we go is a good friend of ours. Most of the time we use them. IT also doesn't hurt that my little brother worked up through the ranks to be an assistant store manager, was assigned to turn around several shitty stores, and the district manager is also a good friend of ours.
Oh (no pics) but they have several gorgeous women working at this particular store. One of them is one of the hottests MILFs I have ever laid eyes on. Long black hair and long, toned legs that go all the way up and make a nice ass of themselves.

I don't get the slurs from you. It makes sense that folks who live economically challenged areas of town would 1) be driving older cars that require more maintenance, and 2) be more inclined to perform maintenance and repair work themselves, rather than hiring that work out. Is it any surprise who you see at the parts counter at Pep Boys or Auto Zone?
I'm guessing you aren't seeing a lot of highly compensated folks there, because they are 1) driving new cars, and 2) paying to have their service work done for them, other than the occasional wrencher who just enjoys working on things.
It's the same reason you don't see a whole lot of lawn service companies in the "hood." Go out to upper income suburbia, and you'll see a bunch.

Vatozone is a very old slur and there is a slur for just about every auto parts store out there. Usually PepBoys is a joke unless you want to buy toys and accessories because they tend to carry less hard parts and have to order a bunch of what they do carry most times.

This. It has nothing to do with race/ethnicity (at least not in my mind, a person of color who doesn't wear his color on his sleeve) but the lack of customer service and knowledge way too many of these stores have the reputation for.
I can't tell you how many times I've practically done the parts counter guy/gal's job when ordering parts.
Then there are the ones who try to argue with you like the guy at Auto Zone who told me there was no LT5 engine code for my '92 Corvette or the chick at NAPA who told me there was no such thing as a 1987 BMW 325 with no "e" "i" "es" "ix" etc.. coding. :banghead:

What gets me is most people working the counter at the retail shops are afraid to break out paper catalogs and they all think they are certified master mechanics and technicians. IT's laughable. If something doesn't show up in teh computer (which is always going to show less than the paper catalogs) they don't bother digging further to find. For instance, you may have a franken car like my T-bucket using parts from various years and different makes. I can't really find parts by year, make, and model and need to break out the paper to look at the measurements and find the right part. When I do insist, places like PeckerBoys will often say they don't have that particular catalog when I can see it in their rack.
