This year after a 17 year gestation period the noisy little bastards are coming to the air. They'll be on trees, on the ground, in the air.....everywhere!! All over the northeast USA. You'll hear them before you see them....:willy::willy:

Millions, and millions or them will be looking for mates, a once every 17 year phenomenon! :ack:

I promised myself that we would leave the area next time those mofos came back. I took one right between the eyes on my motorcycle that almost knocked me out and one off the hand while riding in the car with the window down. The noise is unbearable and the amount of birds triple.
Dammit.

Imagine this at full volume......:willy:
The Sound of Cicadas -- Amazing Noise of Dense Cicadas - YouTube
How loud are cicadas? Some have been measured at 100 decibels at 20 yards away, which is loud enough to be heard over a lawnmower!
How do they make all that racket? On the underside of the abdomen at the front are two stiff membranes called tymbals. If you turn a male on its back you will see two shield-like structures just under the hind legs. The tymbals are underneath these structures. They have a special muscle attached to them and by rapidly contracting and relaxing the muscle - up to 400 times per second! - the tymbal is "popped" back and forth, much like pushing down and then releasing the top of an empty pop can. The cicada's special muscle gets tired after a while and the insect then stops to rest. This is what happens when you hear the buzz of a cicada sputter to a halt. Each species of cicada has a distinct song. Visit the Cicadas of Michigan web site to hear 10 different species of cicada.

2007 was when they last hit here...I remember hitting one in IL on my way to Cruse In, made the most awful (but colorful) mess on the front of the car.
Not returning to this area until 2024.

When I was living in Warner Robins in 98 there were a few around and even then the noise was crazy. :ack: :willy:

We were camping and the noise never stopped.
I love the aviation museum at Warner Robbins. It is a real hidden gem.

Well, to be quite blunt, it's your own damn fault. You knew the cicadas were active and you went out with minimal protection.

I hate those damn things. We had them in MD and PA about 7 or 8 years ago. A year later we went on vacation to the USAF museum in Dayton and the damn things were out there!
When they were out once in the 80s, I had one follow me for about 3 blocks. Never hit me, stayed about 2 feet above my right shoulder. Freaked me out

damn, I don't think I have ever seen em. If I leave the country, when should I return?
Just read on Fox News that parts of NJ could see 1 billion per sq. mile. NFW, that works out to @ 36 per sq. ft. :kimblair: I'm out of here at those numbers
"They're largely harmless, but their sheer numbers can cause headaches. Some areas could see as many as a billion of the cicadas per square mile. That can lead to a lot of dead bugs all over roadways and grassy surfaces. They can also disrupt outdoor events with their loud buzzing."

Hard to believe all they do is suck on an underground root for 17 years, surface to molt, mate, then die three days later. It would suck to be the one mofo who failed to get on after that long a dry spell.
