View Full Version : What I have learned on fishing trips.

As many people here know I love to fish. I have taken two fishing trips during my spring break as a vacation, and these some things I have learned.

1. Most of my friends have no idea how to fish.
2. These friends want to come fish with me at 630 am and leave me no way to wake them up (separate cabins. )
3. They are able to knot up spinning reels. (Not sure how they do it)
4. Insist on changing lures even when I am catching fish on the lure they are using.
5. I like fishing enough to deal with all of the above.

Pic related.

Backlash a spinning reel? Um, how? Overfill the spool, twisted line?

Sounds like you are a good friend to have. Just keep your hands off your buddies' worms.

If you rub the bait fish on your hands and don't wash them your buddies will think you had a hot date Kyle.

The last time I got up early and went fishing with a fishing-crazy friend it was in Hot Springs AR with two other guys, one of them (Pat) was like Joebuck, fished all the time. We got to the pond, put the john boat in the water, and I think I was just barely awake. The sun was almost poking above the horizon, there was dew everywhere, and I wanted coffee.

Pat handed me a Zebco because I told him I would likely screw up the open-face reels. I cast out there a few times, got a bite or two, and then on about my 10th cast something big hit. Or it was a snag maybe. Hell, I don't know. I kind of was reeling it in somewhat, and suddenly this big bass jumps out of the water about 5 feet from the boat. Pat is yelling at me to do something or other. Whatever I did wasn't good enough apparently because just as he was trying to scoop the fish in the boat with the net, he got off and swam away.

To this day Pat is pissed at me about that. It was a really big bass, probably 5 lbs or so he says. I think it gets a little bigger every year.

A few years later I did land a 140 lb. marlin in Cabo. That was fun.

Guilty. I did a good number on one of Joe's open faced reels when we were on Toledo Bend.

I got tired of waiting at the dock for over-sleeping friends. Now I tell them what time the boat is leaving and that I hope they are on it. Most miss just once...

Time for a different fishing buddy. Or, put a couple of sweatshirts in your boat for forgetful, but good friends.

The only time I bitched was when I was standing on the back deck of the boat, pissing down wind, and you cranked up the trolling motor only to hit a stump damn near dumping me in the piss filled water :funny:

Decades ago, Neil, Bob, Les and me went out many a summer/weekend/whenever we needed to get out bottom wet, Chesapeake Bay.....

24' Bayliner, Bob could catch fish by just looking at the water, maybe ONE trip he failed to catch 1/2 the day's load.....one day we had caught SO much fish, we had about 6" of freeboard off the stern as we pulling into St. Michal's...gave them to a restaurant....we were tossing fish down the companion way to keep the boat balanced....when the bow floor started to fill up, we headed to shore before the fish spoiled

HOW in hell Neil managed to handle the boat is a mystery to ME, we all were drunk as skunks, and flat worn OUT.....ME drew short straw and had to sleep with the fishing poles in the V berth up front woke up at ~6AM with a Tony 21 stuck up my nose....:issues::rofl:.....by time we dumped the fish, it was about 5 pm, and we had a ride up the Bay to our launch point...trailer....

:seasix::seasix: gotta LOVE the water, we going to Cedar Key sometime soon, Arts Festival.....but the sunsets over the Gulf are just FAN TAST IC

and I guessed it was sunrise from the photo, and turns out I was right....why?? the absence of the orange/yellows in the pix....

I learned that fish are smarter than I am. They don't like me and don't come anywhere near me. That is all.

ps. I hate fishing. It is very, very, very boring.

Bass fishing season open there already?

I'm getting pumped for fishing. My boat gets pulled from storage next week. After some maintenance work, we launch on the 18th and start this season's salmon fishing...:hurray:

I have to agree, plus I hate cleaning them and really don't much care for freshwater fish anyway. A good catfish fry is OK, and crappie can be pretty good as are walleye. But you have to deal with all that slimy fish.

My dad's pond is chock full of perch, large mouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Sometimes when I visit I go out there and stick a plastic worm on a hook and catch fish, about one every minute, and set them free. Like a boss.

A light lure cast into the wind or not laying a finger on the spool/line as the lure hits the water will twist/ball/FUBAR the line after as little as five casts.

There are two kinds of people. You are one, I am the other. I have a friend like you. He loves to get up at 3:30am, checks the tides, plans his trips. He asks, "do you want to go fish when the fish are biting, or do you want to go fish when it is convenient for you?"

Yeah, I want to fish when it's convenient for me. Waking up at 3:30 makes it more like......work.
