The Coen Brothers, who have given us Raising Arizona, Fargo, O' Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading and of course The Big Lewbowski are in pre-production now on a new feature film adaptation of Charles Portis' 1968 novel True Grit.

So far "Mattie Ross" and "Ned Pepper" have not been cast.

Josh Brolin will play Tom Chaney.

Matt Damon will play La Boeuf.

Jeff Bridges will play Rooster Cogburn.

The Coen script is apparently much more faithful to the novel than the 1969 John Wayne starring adaptation.

I know remakes have a stigma, but as I always say; remake or not, a good story, told well, will always make good cinema. They've got the story, they've got the writers and a director that has given us incredible films, and they have a cast that, so far, is heavy with talent. As a western fan, I'm very interested in this. As a John Wayne fan, I'm a bit wary. Wayne IS Rooster Cogburn... I'm not sure even The Dude can fill those boots.

True Grit will in theaters summer 2011.

DOUBLEYEW TEE EFF?

This is OUTRAGEOUS. You don't remake The Ten Commandments. You don't "re-imagine" Ben Hur. You don't "reboot" The Wizard of Oz. You don't f'ing TOUCH True Grit.

This is a crime against nature. This sucks large donkey appendages.

Nobody touches Duke as Cogburn. That fiasco with Warren Oates proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I'm a large fan of the Coens and Bridges stars in The Fisher King one of my favorite films of all time but this... this... this is sacred ground.
:explode:

Who plays Gen. Price?

So do I. Coming at it from a POV of "The Coens Are Doing It" this is f**kin' AWESOME NEWS.

Coming from the John Wayne side of the coin... this just ain't right. You just don't mess with some things.

I'm conflicted.

Price has not been cast as far as I know.

... and a I totally agree with you. When I heard "remaking True Grit" I went ballistic. Then I heard "Coens", "Bridges", "Brolin", "Damon" and I went "wait... what?"

Right now I'm so dangblamed confounded I just don't know what to think.

I personally can't stand westerns. In my current class we have had to watch a few JW movies and I just don't care for em. The fact that the Coen brothers will be doing it will get me to watch this tho.

In theory I don't like to watch westerns, though if one is on it catches my eye and I can't stop watching... I wholly enjoy em'

I never really liked westerns. My twin brother was a western nut. He loved Randolph Scott.

I was into war movies. Since Vietnam I don't care to see any.
