The crew's here, they're putting down 700sqft of engineered hickory flooring over the next three days. :hurray: we're replacing any carpeting that was downstairs, :yesnod:

Good deal Chris :seasix:
Hickory has beautiful grains and will hold up over the long haul.

Will be a bit more echo, but its worth it and can be helped with area rugs.

I'm pretty excited, the carpet only lasted three years in the high traffic areas. I think this wood should hold up to the dogs too. :yesnod:

No glue except for the threshold pieces between the laminate and the tile.

Cool, were using float to match the wood to the edge of the tile, so no t-strips are needed...unfortunately it's gonna cost me 20 friggen bags of float. Then everything wil be glued down, no padding under it so the dogs nails don't tap too much.

:iagree:

I like the looks of Hickory also.

I've been in a few homes where the owners "loved" their hardwood floors but were 80% covered with area rugs.

You have any dogs? Their claws can groove that stuff up pretty quickly if you didn't get a decent quality product.

We got a shaw engineered hickory. (Shaw jubilee 5" burnished amber) to be precise. Well be keeping on top of trimming their nails from now on that's for sure.

We sought out oak at first, thinking it'd be easier to match for any later additions. We brought home a bunch of different samples, including accidentally getting two hickory samples. The Hickory won out. :yesnod: And I took a bit of a chance with a lowly rated Internet vendor, who came through and undercut most offers for the same material by almost $1 a sqft.

The reason for all the area rugs is noise reduction. Carpet is a great sound dampener, but wood really raises the noise/echo level. I have wood floors in the hall and dining room, stone in the kitchens and baths, but carpet in the living room and bedrooms; otherwise the noise level would just be too high.

The noise is the reason we opted to glue the wood to the slab, I didn't want that hollow tapping noise from the dogs nails. I'm sure there will still be some echos, but drapes and other things in the room an help damper that too.

Self leveling concrete?

Needs 16 hours to dry.

Dont rush it or it may not settle properly.

Keeping it warm and dry will be your best method of curing properly.

So the ac is probably counter productive?

I would keep it around 70 and set up a dehumidifier if you want. Remember heating the air pulls out the humidity also.

Had a neighbor level out a 4x8 section of his floor a couple years ago. I told him to make sure that he put down a primer/adhesive paint prior to applying the concrete. He decided to cheap out and not use the primer/adhesive.

A couple days later you could lift up the 4x8 sheet of concrete leveling mixture like a sheet of plywood.

Well it's too late for that, but it's requiring a hammer and chisel to remove some spots that were too high.

I always acid etch first then use the primer.

If it wont come up with a hammer then you should be fine. :seasix:

The flooring place I used for the product has mixed reviews online...certainly seemed a bit sketchy at times when dealing with them...but they delivered as they said they would and saved me about $500 bucks.

Most people opt for laminate flooring as getting engineered wood flooring is very expensive to cover concrete floors.

The only other need for engineered floors other then having concrete is radiant heating.

I really wasn't interested in a printed product like a faux wood tile or laminate, I really wanted the real deal. The engineered floors seem to withstand dogs a bit better and still have the ability to be resurfaced, later on when we sell he house. Seeing everything down and quarter round being finished up now, were really pleased with how it all came out.

Karen really didn't want transition strips of any kind, these guys meticulously matched the wood to the existing tile, leaving a very minimal gap to be filled with caulking. All in al, I'm really pleased with the way it came out.

The game room became a storage room, piled floor to ceiling, plus the kitchen was out of commission holding the couches. My dad just came by and helped us reclaim the game room.
