This is Legend. He was in a very abusive home where ultimately the husband shot and killed the wife and then himself. Legend was home the entire time. :sadangel: He's had a very difficult life to say the least.
Some friends of our's own this place (http://www.petsrememberedcremation.com/) and adopted Legend. He was afraid of absolutely everything when I first met him. He had obviously been abused quite badly.
So, for two full class sessions, 20 weeks total, every Tuesday I worked with Legend. One on one. It was frustrating and rewarding all at once. We'd make huge gains one week, then have three weeks of setbacks. Slowly things started to turn around however. He'd let me pet him, feed him and finally walk him. :seasix:
Legend came camping at our house last night. His mom and dad had a banquet to attend. He's probably never gonna be one of those run around the yard and jump all over you dogs, but his life is much better these days.

So your wife is touching him?
He's much better with women than men. He was deathly afraid of me at first, my wife much less so. He FINALLY started to warm up but it's taken a long, long time and a shit ton of work. Rehabilitating a dog like this who's afraid of everything is a bitch.
His feet are F'd up because he spent his entire life on concrete. They're splayed pretty bad. We put down a few doggie beds for him, but he'd rather lay on the tile. Old habit I suppose. We're not done yet, the work continues. :cert:

Thats great he can be rehabilitated to at least some degree of normalcy.
I wish i could get my border collie to not be afraid of noises, and hand motions.

I hate people that abuse animals like this.
Who in the world could look at that dog and want to be mean to it?? What kind of person does that?
You're a good man Thomas, and thanks to your wife too.

I just don't understand it. We don't really know what happened to Legend in his previous life, but it was obviously pretty traumatic based on his behavior when I first met him.
My buddy Skip is really the one who deserves the kudo's. He took this dog in knowing there was gonna be a lot of work to do. He and his wife have stuck with it. :cert:

Well thank Skip for us. :cert:
We will be moving soon and might be in a better position to get a dog. Though we might not have the time for a dog of our own yet, stories like these make me want to at least foster dogs in need. Although I would have a hell of a time letting them go.

The folks who run the foster system are counting on foster parent failure like what you are describing. Actually, that's one failure that's OK in my book......for kids or pets.

The real hero's in this are Skip and his wife. Legend isn't your typical rescue.
I had EVERYONE at school involved at one time or another. Simple things like, "Walk close by this dog. Don't look at him, just walk by." The ENTIRE training series was one big exercise in confidence building. He still can't sit.

I adopted a sheltie who came from an abusive home. The foster mother was walking him one day when I stopped and started to pet him. She said it was the first time he allowed someone to touch him and usually would cower behind her legs. She asked if I would like to adopt him and just looking into his eyes I couldn't say no. He was the one of the best dogs I ever had and just passed away two years ago at the age of 15.

Beautiful pup. Legend will have a great life the rest of his years.
Great looking pup! Kudos to you for having the patience to help him out! Formerly abused and neglected dogs are sometimes so difficult to get to come around. (mini marshmallows worked for Taco Jones) :D

We let the male Dal and the Wire around him. Our female we kept separated. We only had him overnight so it was a piece of cake.

I've never understood having an animal just to abuse it.
People can be the lowest animals of all.
You and your friends done good. :cert:

Adorable dog.
We found/adopted a CRAZY skittish dog that has taken about 3 years so far in the process. She jumps when the TV changes channels. She apparently never learned to play. She didn't know what to do for a long time. Watching the other two dogs, she is coming around and now and then tussles with the big dog. She is just beginning to run when the other dogs run and will chase our big dog and lunge at him. I am guessing she'll never be full functioning.
Best of luck to you and your buddy.

Our dog Bruce whimpers like Chewbacca whenever he gets a new squeaky toy to play it. Drives Boxers mad for some reason.
The kids says he sounds he's enjoying a butter kuchen dessert or something! They call him "Big Baby" and Big Kopper-kolored Kuchen!"
