This sculpture named ”Memorial to an unborn child” is the work of a young slovak named Martin Hudaceka. Martin was encouraged by a friend to create the piece. The sculpture was erected in Slovakia last year.

Beautiful, isn't it?

Yes, it is a very beautiful piece.
But... Is there a shallower meaning to the work?
'Cause I'm getting that vibe.

It was commissioned by a group of women in Slovokia to sympathize with women who lost a child through miscarriage, infant death, and yes, abortion. This thread is not meant to comment on abortion.

Sorry, I mis-intrepreted your remarks. I thought the sculpture was touching; my first thought was of a young woman who lost her child due to its sudden death or who was perhaps still-born.

To my eye, that's exactly what it is. The mother figure appears to be indicating shame by her body position and posture.
The child appears to be telling the mother "It's OK," yet the mother is still indicating a shameful pose.
I don't like it. Nothing personal Spence.

As far as the sculpture The Mother looks more consumed with grief over the loss of a child rather than shame because of the loss.

This is what art is supposed to, create dialogue, interpretation, conversation, introspection. It can mean different things to different people.
Since the subject matter can't avoid the controversial topic of abortion, especially with the use of the word "unborn", it will have a wide variety of reactions.

Fair answer. :cert: As a lifelong Catholic, this doesn't exactly fit their agenda. :D There are time's I feel abortion is justified. Which isn't to say I support it 110% in all cases, if this makes any sense.

Agreed. This doesn't mean this is "Bad" simply because I don't like it. The sculpture has sad overtones to me. Therefore I don't care for it.
I was going to say "You being Catholic" but had my doubts and didn't. Didn't remember if you were Catholic or Lutheran. :leaving:

True, not all art is there to make you feel good. My room mate in college purchased a print of "Guernica" and hung it on his wall which I found odd. He had it up for week and then took it down because it was so depressing.
Dave Navarro has a giant print of that VietCong guerilla being executed on his wall to remind him of how good his life is. I personally wouldn't want that pic anywhere in my home.

Yes, the size of a wall. Not really the decor I would want in my home. Then again, I'm not a rock star.

Skia, lemme try this. The current labels for the abortion debate are "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice." If I had to pic one, I go with "Pro-Choice" since "Pro-choice butonlyinsertaincasesotherwise Pro-Life" isn't available. :D

I like it. But, I do think it is about abortion. Here is an article I found on the piece. LifeSiteNews Mobile | ‘Heart-rending’: Young Slovakian sculptor captures post-abortion pain, mercy and forgiveness (http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/heart-rending-young-slovakian-sculptor-captures-post-abortion-pain-mercy-an/)
I'm going to guess the person that wrote that is using their interpretation rather than the artists. It's an anit-abortion website.

:iagree: I like it. It's good art. Yeah it's sad, that's exactly what it's supposed to be.
I'm sure shame and guilt are in there too. As stated, it's supposed to evoke feelings and encourage thought and retrospection.

If art is there to invoke mood, encourage thought and facilitate discussion, then this thread proves this sculpture is serving it's purpose.
My take was the subject matter was the grief a mother feels from the loss of a child. How the child was lost was secondary to me.

That pretty much sums up my belief, too. I used to be Pro-Life, but the political reality got too muddled...meaning there are too many people out there being born that you and I have to support practically all their lives. While I don't endorse the Pro-Life belief of abortion as a "right", I think their ingenuous argument that exception to abortion should be made if the health of the mother is in jeopardy is apalling. One can always find a doctor who will say that the birth of a child would "adversely affect the mother's health".

Drives me nuts. I'm not an art guy by anyones definition. But if I had to pick a favorite? Monet or Warhol.

Why should the innocent life be punished with death?

That's what I hoped would happen. Funny...how when you take a subject that might possibly have overtones can immediately develop into a full-blown argument that the "instigator" never meant to happen. As has already been said, art is controversial...but it should be controversial on its merit as art, not on its political merit.

I would think it impossible to find your own interpretation offensive. You are seing what you choose to see and then put off by it?
I see a sad mother and a child that has passed. The reason the child passed is irrelevant and not part of the message.
I guess the pet "Rainbow Bridge" is offensive because people have euthanized their animals.
