A dispatcher’s desperate pleas for a nurse to perform CPR and try to save the life of an 87-year-old woman at a California retirement home was met with stubborn resistance, a shocking 911 tape reveals.
“It’s a human being,” the dispatcher says in the dramatic call. “Is there anybody that’s willing to help this lady and not let her die?”
“Not at this time,” the nurse calmly replies.
The victim was later declared dead at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield — forcing the nursing home, Glenwood Gardens, to defend its nurse’s actions after the life-and-death situation last Tuesday.
The Bakersfield Fire Department identified the dispatcher as Tracey Halvorsen, who took the call about a woman who had collapsed at the retirement facility’s dining room and was barely breathing.
“We need to get CPR started,” Halvorsen says in the 7-minute call, which was made public Sunday.
“Yeah, we can’t do CPR,” says the nurse, identified as Colleen, referring to a company policy that requires employees to wait for emergency responders to arrive before attempting the procedure.

From what I heard on the radio, the family didn't seem all too upset. Hope that's not true.....

Article said the family was "satisfied" with how the facility handled the situation.

Translation = family now gets the will read.

In FL, anyone trained as a first responder has a Statutory duty to act in situations like this. Unless the patient declines medical assistance, the first responder is required to render aid.

I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure office policy does not trump Statute Law in Florida.

I'll give you one of these::iagree:, with one caveat: I better have a mouth barrier or I'm not doing any rescue breaths on anyone outside of my family.
Before I get attacked, here is what could happen to you if you decide to throw caution to the wind:

I am CPR certified. In California, I cannot be sued for performing CPR on someone, unless some kind of malice can be proven. But I am not required to perform it if I coose not to.

The nurse didn't want to save her, her family isn't upset, could it be this woman was a horrible bitch and we are better off without her?

Because if she been there any period of time, she seen it so much, that it becomes just one more....kinda like a battlefield.....

I got acquainted with that selling the Wash Daily News in Suburban Hospital Bethesda Md, about 8 blocks from my house, the patients laying there, passing on many times,......then as a TV repair man for a couple summers, working in Asbury Methodist nursing home, where the shop owner gave away free TV service to the old ladies.....which are about 95% of the occupants, .....

as was my mother, for about 7-8 years......at age 94.....

The issue is right here: CALIFORNIA - everyone out there is stoned or living better through medication.

The state government doesnt give a rats ass because that person is no longer living off their dime.

It had to be a tough call for the nurse. Her bosses established a policy -- for whatever reason -- forbidding staff from taking action.

So if she tries to help the poor woman, she loses her job in the process.

Instead she calls 911 to get professionals to respond. Now, the world sees her as the bad guy and the bosses who came up with the policy are still anonymous...

Or...she could have saved the human beings life, gotten fired, gone on all the morning talk shows and told her story and gotten job offers left and right working for a more humane employer.

Her choice. She chose to let someone die. She now has to live with that.

I would be surprised to hear she didn't have a DNR order since her daughter was a nurse.
