Any of you knowledgeable Ford guys know if there's any recalls or factory problems with Ford trucks transmissions? Yesterday my buddy's 2007 F150 4 wheel drive truck decided it would stop going backwards all of a sudden. Nothing, no bang, grinding, no horsing it around, just won't go backwards, motor just spins. Forward...no problem?? :bigears:
Did he try putting it in reverse? :bigears:

Everything is so electronic these daze, I would be looking at a bad signal wire from the shifter, or maybe loose plug at the trans, I assume the fluid looks normal, and this happened all at once.....

thanks for the HELPFUL post Gene. No warning, nothing.....I was up on line checking and it seems to be tons of the same thing happening to others. Some thing about a reverse gear snap ring that breaks in the trans......
.....probably made in f'kn China! :toetap:

My wife's '01 Odyssey tranny let loose without warning about two years ago. Bad clutch packs. We later learned Honda issued a full-blown recall on 1999 through 2004 models, but too many miles for us to take advantage of.
Owners of some 2007 and newer models are reporting a distinct "judder" from their Odysseys when driving between 20 and 45 mph -- an issue that Honda addressed in a 2009 technical service bulletin and is repairing under warranty.
However, by far the largest group of transmission complaints involves Odysseys from model years 1999 through 2004. Them jokers ain't cheap, either. I ended up buying a reman. unit to the tune of $4,500 bones! A new one costs close to 7K!
I'm thinking a transmission cooler is money well spent on these models. The core issue sees to be heat management, the lack of which seems to lead to premature failure.

I have an F350 Diesel with 51,000 miles and on the third transmission all bought by Ford. It's Fords weak point.

Don't know about now, but Dodge trannies used to be doo-doo, too. :flush:

Do you know the model number of the trans? I might have a manual for it.

thanks Bobby, that's what I'm finding out on Ford forums too, most said the dealers won't do anything about it, repair is around 3200$. I gave him Ford's customer service # to see if they would do anything, out of warranty. :seasix:
Jules....all heavy duty with cooler package. This is a top of the line truck, never plowed, HD everything, 60K kilometers,(36K miles)...

That's awful. Something ain't right. What do you plan on doing once Ford balks on the factory warranty? Should you sell the vehicle while the bomb's still ticking?

That's his problem, I'm strictly GM, for trucks.:seasix:
200K MILES on my original trans in my old beater Chevy, never a problem. Change the oil every few years....good to go. :D

$3200 seems to be the agreed upon price among Ford dealers, and they won't fix one, they rather sell a new one, more incomE that way.

I have rebuilt several auto transmissions, and even one stickshift, helping a buddy years ago.....the worst one I ever did was in a '92 Dodge 250 6 door van, 318 FI engine in front, the thing was known as a A 518 it's a 727 with an overdrive on the tailshaft, and that thing kicked my ass BAD.....actually aggravating an old belly button hernia I had to have surgery on to finally FIX it.....the 200 4r in the vette never gave me much troubles, but helping a buddy over the last few weeks, in his garage, HIS 200 4r is kicking our asses but BAD, but the core he got was a totally destroyed POS, looked like someone was in it a messed it up but good, but the sheer destruction was amazing.....the 700 in the motor home/camper I did maybe 3 years ago, so far so good, I thought it was lots harder then the 200......
I have never been into a Ford trans, so have no clue, but tell you what,....parts and a book are not all THAT expensive, and so you probably need find a trans parts place on the net, like CK Transmissions?? I just deal locally here with a supply house, they are very helpful.....
get me a model number or maybe the exact vehicle description, and I can call the local parts house, and get their opinion....
PM me, I have a sneaky suspicion you can get away from this for lots less than a 3200 buck job....
the biggest thing about any rebuild, is of course....CLEANLINESS......it has to be sweet smelling and sanitary.....like your S/O.......

But Gene..
Have you ever done it outside in the snow? :island14:
I'm guessing he could at least bring it in and warm it up inside his Igloo

I called my parts guy, he not so much up on all the newest ones, but he does carry parts, He dunno if the one he thinking of that tosses something like what you mention above, it kills a forward gear.....like second or what ever.....but he dunno if it affects reverse also.....
still think a part worth about 150 bux at most, and maybe a rebuild kit is the trick.....
out the door for far less than a grand.....
